Re: Labour going forward

Extinction Rebellion activists have been criticised across the political spectrum after delaying some newspaper publication by blockading printing presses.

Priti Patel branded the demonstration an “attack on democracy”.
She wrote on Twitter: “This morning people across the country will be prevented from reading their newspaper because of the actions of Extinction Rebellion.

Robert Jenrick, the Housing Secretary, labelled the Extinction Rebellion protesters an “intolerant minority”.
Posting on Twitter, he said: “A free press matters to all of us who value a free society. They mustn’t be silenced by an intolerant minority.”

Shadow International Trade Secretary Emily Thornberry said the printing press protest was “very worrying” amid concerns elderly people may miss out on newspaper deliveries.
She told Times Radio: “I don’t really know what it is that is expected to be achieved and I know that for many older listeners it’s very much part of their daily life, getting their paper delivered in the morning and I just think it’s wrong.”

However, Labour MP Dawn Butler appeared to support the acitivists, tweeting: "Bravo #ExtinctionRebellion....Excellent work...."

The reason is good and worth a Bravo.... the methods wrong, apart from stifling free speech ( even xenophobic anti environment Murdoch trash ) it also gives the right wing mouthpieces ammunition ..... for little return ( most likely why MP Butler deleted the tweet)

@XRebellionUK

All we're asking. Coverage in many of these newspapers is polluting national debate on climate change, immigration policy, the rights and treatment of minority groups, and dozens of other issues.

Re: Labour going forward

Silly action.
Does she realise that if she supports blocking Murdoch and objecting to the cuts to services for the vulnerable, that infers her approval of further depriving many already deprived elderly in care homes of their daily paper? Not sensible when they cannot get out, or as in parts of Wales, are now under lockdown from visitors again?
Access online to a paper is not the same thing and not possible for many.

How is that going to encourage support for XR?

They should learn some PR lessons from the LGB etc groups who are now accepted in mainstream political thinking after running a very successful campaign to gain understanding. At the moment, pace Camden, they're going the wrong way.

Re: Labour going forward

Or maybe, we simply need a proper Press Watch Dog to to regulate press standards and stop the pollution of the national debate on climate change, immigration policy, the rights and treatment of minority groups by the likes of the gutter "red tops" like the Murdoch group Express and DM etc ...... instead of a 'Toothless ISPO' Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Then there would be no need for this mainly middleclass Welsh leader led XRebellion and their demos. Which many activists see as diminishing a bunch of reasonable causes e.g. climate change etc , and instead just give the Hartley Brewers, Katie Hopkins of this world and the same rightwing tabloids ammunition to alienate these causes with everyone ....

Whilst I don't agree with this protest, at least it has brought out the Nazi appeasers with their complaints and whinging.

Council of Europe issues media freedom alert over UK government blacklisting of investigative journalists

The UK government has been formally warned for threatening press freedom after it blacklisted a group of investigative journalists and denied them access to information.

The Council of Europe issued the Level 2 "media freedom alert" after Ministry of Defence press officers refused to deal with Declassified UK, a website focusing on foreign and defence policy stories.

The intervention by the Council ironically comes as Boris Johnson and his ministers condemned environmental activists as a threat to press freedom for blockading printing plants in protest at newspapers' climate coverage.

Maybe the Tories apart from defence don't want investigative journalists poking about Covid 19 contracts not put out to tender that end up in friends ,supporters family hands ..... ????

Labour left must work with Starmer or risk ‘return to tomb’, says Corbyn adviser.

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics...corbyn-adviser

Extract:
Divisions are emerging in the left wing of the party over how to ensure the ground it gained isn’t lost under the new leader.
Labour’s left must work constructively with Keir Starmer and resist the temptation to go “back in our sealed tomb”, Jeremy Corbyn’s former policy chief has warned, amid a growing split on the left over how to respond to the new leader.

Starmer aims to build trust with 'new leadership' slogan.

On the eve of their first "virtual" party conference, Labour have unveiled
their new slogan: "A New Leadership".

Re: Labour going forward

Taken only a short time for the New Labour leader to burst that euphoric but empty Boris Bubble ...

Not from my wing of the Party so a bit convincing needed, but to the public at large his quiet sensible and commanding Leadership in comparison to indecisive Boris Shambles is hitting home....

YouGov poll shows Tory lead wipe out and finds Keir Starmer is ‘PM in waiting’

YouGov polling has shown the Tory lead to have been wiped out for the first time since Boris Johnson became prime minister, as the public continues to take to Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Keir Starmer’s messaging was cutting through with the public when asked if he was a ‘prime minister in waiting’.

More of the public (38%) believe that he looks like a leader ready to take office, compared to 31% who do not agree.

He is seen as the best candidate for the job, with 34% of support, compared to 31% for Boris Johnson. A further 31% still remain undecided.
