CPS says MP for Leicester East has been charged with offence of harassment against a female.

The Labour MP Claudia Webbe has been charged with an offence of harassment and will appear in court next month, the Crown Prosecution Service has announced.

Webbe, a former councillor in London who was elected as the MP for Leicester East at the 2019 election, was charged with harassment against one female, the CPS said in a statement.

The 55-year-old has been charged after an investigation by the Metropolitan police and is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on 11 November. The alleged offence is said to have taken place between 1 September 2018 and 26 April this year.

Jenny Hopkins, the head of the special crime unit of the CPS, said in a statement: “The CPS has today decided that Claudia Webbe, MP for Leicester East, should be charged with an offence of harassment against one female. The CPS made the decision after receiving a file of evidence from the Metropolitan police.

“Criminal proceedings against Ms Webbe are now active and she has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Webbe said: “I am innocent of any wrongdoing and look forward to proving this in court. I will be vigorously defending myself against these claims.”

Webbe was born and brought up in Leicester, but her adoption for the Leicester East seat after her tenure as a councillor and cabinet member at Islington council prompted some complaints within the local party.

She won the constituency with a majority of just over 6,000, down from the 22,000-plus majority of the longstanding former MP Keith Vaz.
Not often you hear of a charge like that being laid against a woman.

A meeting of the Unite union executive has decided to cut its affiliation money to the Labour Party by about 10%, BBC Newsnight understands.

Unite is the Labour Party's single biggest donor, providing the party with millions in funding every year.

But there is anger in the union about Labour's direction under Sir Keir Starmer with a source saying he and his inner team were "just not listening".

Re: Labour going forward

Its a good Idea, ensuring the Party sticks to its core and historical hard fought for workers rights and Socialist principles and not slipping into any Blairite ways ..... We wouldn't like to it go down the road of the present Government in having to instead enrich and give favor to the people that donated to them by not tendering Govt contracts ...

So you're okay with Labour simply throwing money at problems to make it go away?

Even though the legal advice from Labours own legal people to Starmer, a former lawyer, was the opposite.

Mr McCluskey said his executive was angry about the decision "because they thought it was an absolute mistake and wrong to pay out huge sums of money to individuals who were suing the Labour Party based on the Panorama programme, when Labour's own legal people were saying that they would lose that case if it went to court.

"So we shouldn't have paid them anything."

I doubt whether your response will be able to stick to Labour issues.
