The EU going forward

EU's final WARNING: Horror in Brussels as Italian poll finds huge number want to QUIT bloc

A new poll has found 40 percent of Italians would support quitting the EU and scrapping the euro as its official currency.

A further 6.1 percent would support just quitting the EU, while 7.3 percent support remaining in the bloc but scrapping the euro.

Just 41.7 percent agreed in maintaining the status quo.

The results come from a survey carried out by pollsters Bidimedia between April 15 and 16, who asked 3,400 Italians: "Would you agree to leave the euro and the EU?"

The findings are a warning to EU leaders about the fragile state of the bloc, with strains in relations beginning to show.

Just last month another opinion poll, carried out by the news agency Dire, found 88 percent of Italians felt they had been let down by their European allies.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen even said sorry to Italy earlier this month for the bloc's response to coronavirus.

The eurocrat offered “a heartfelt apology” for letting down Italy when it first became engulfed by the virus.

Speaking to the European Parliament, Ms Von der Leyen said: “Too many were not there on time when Italy needed a helping hand at the very beginning.

“And yes, for that it is right that Europe as a whole offers a heartfelt apology.”

Re: The EU going forward

Just a knee jerk reaction to the Coronavirus and the perception in part true of lack of EU support ( hence the EU apology) .. No country, in its right mind would put itself, its people, its reputation and economy through such angst and self flagellation and in the process negotiate itself poorer ( for one Italy could never afford it, and would find it hard to extricate itself from the Euro )

"A knee jerk reaction"...…….They were blanked by the EU in a major crisis, could be a bit more than how you describe it. Not forgetting though, if what was said a few weeks back is correct, not one individual member state stepped forward to help Italy, nor did the UK as it goes. It was a further dig in the guts to the Italians when certain member states put a ban on exports of PPE, even to other member states.
Personally I don't think Italy will leave the EU BUT this day & age...….who knows?

In the beginning your right they didn't, nobody would deny and again as you said no one else did, they all reverted to a well used Brexit word Sovereign ( the same as their Health Services within the EU )

So yes, the Italians have the right to feel let down from the Union ....... but that changed and changing they came to help and still are , and maybe the €50 million Italian aid scheme from the EU new covid aid may help further.

Would the Italians now with a badly wrecked economy ( like many others because of covid ) badly in the need of a cash infusion to rebuild, spurn their richer Northern EU members who they will need to Guarantee loans in the rebuild ? by going for Italexit ?

Mmm €50 billion, you might find with the Italian voters that money won’t be the issue. It had plenty of anti EU sentiment even before this virus.
Anyway it will be up to the Italians.

See barnier is complaining UK is not agreeing to his deal and he wants to extend the extension date. No need. Just leave with no deal.
