Re: Colston statue

Were any of our heroes without blemish?

Should Mandela statues be taken down as he tried to emulate Guy Fawkes?

Re: Colston statue

That’s a very good point

In that way they are there as part of history to be remembered for ALL. they were responsible for not airbrushed heroism

It heartens me that the younger generation increasingly refuse to accept without question the dubious presentation of so called history

They don't hate their country, or their history. Not having statues does not change the past, which is why they are still trying to make their way back into the human race - nobody has forgotten what they did because they removed the symbols of that era.

Likewise, young people think that tipping statues will change the history of Bristol - it wont; they need to learn to accept the past and not try to rewrite it.

Twas indeed a policeman kneeling that caused the problem wasn't it!

Re: Colston statue

Pulling down a statue is one thing, but attempting to burn the flag is not acceptable.

Good god we agree on something!- I am off for a lie down!

Burning flags is dangerous and unacceptable

Its used in my old neck of the woods to insult communities

Re: Colston statue

If the statue in Bristol was deemed to be inappropriate in this day and age, then it should have been removed by the authorities. To decide to pull it down and throw it into the water is still called criminal damage where I come from.
I dare say there are a lot of statues of people now deemed to be of a dubious background in this present day, but you can't go round simply pulling them down.
Neither can you let subjective opinions take control.
Imagine a supporter of the Armenian side of the argument going around Turkey pulling down statues of Ataturk ?

Re: Colston statue

To be fair to the mayor of Bristol he did condemn " vandalism "

Where that crime stands compared to slavery is obviously a personal opinion
