Colston statue

So the Colston statue in Bristol was rightly pulled down yesterday.
Are there any statues you would like pulled from their plinth.

Re: Colston statue

I think the tide of feeling against imperialism and racism often symbolised with statues etc is spreading with attacks on Churchill effigies in England and now a demand for removal of this statue in Belgium

Even in sleepy County Down in the North of Ireland theres now a call for the council to rename a street there currently named after a man with links to the slave trade

I hear Colston built most of Bristol. Should that be demolished as well? I had never heard of the bloke until yesterday, but I do have a problem with symbolic demolishing of the past, policemen kneeling asking for forgiveness of a baying crowd, and gesture politics in general.

Lenin.jpg

Frankly I was disappointed when the Lenin statue in our main square was taken down.

Why are we so reluctant to be reminded of our past – IMO Lenin should have remained (but wearing his Ukrainian football shirt !)

I don't hate my country. I don't hate the people in it. I understand the past and how it sits with the present. You need to live with the past, not in it. Trying to rub out bits of the past that offend the eye does not remove it from history.

Re: Colston statue

Not only statues & streets but entire cities as well !

Renaming Lourenço Marques in Zimbabwe as Maputo – whilst admittedly apt as it sounds like an African porridge – is unlikely to attract tourists.

Re: Colston statue

I was thinking along the lines that it’s inappropriate to have statues commemorating those who believed other races were inferior, used concentration camps, utilised murderous militia to slaughter those in territories they occupied and domestically used the military to break up strikes and proposed use of the Air Force to bomb their fellow countrymen simply for being in crowds of strikers

Now to be fair all of the above also applies to Hitler- not just Churchill

The 2 adversaries were somewhat cut from the same cloth
