Mosque or Church

It seems the time has come for modern Turkey to decide whether or not this mediaeval building is actually a mosque or a church.

It is all about politics, you can bet that the first prayers will be held on July 15th.

Re: Mosque or Church

It is about time that the state and religion became disentangled , one is a mystical eulogy about a non existent deity , the other is a mystical musing on strictures by an existential deity .

As to why they should interact leaves me bamboozled .

Re: Mosque or Church

Post should really read Museum or Mosque, ok it was a Church but since 1934 its been a Museum ... Like IBO said its a political decision to cancel its Museum status, due to rising Nationalism promoted by someone who isn't so secure as they were. And as Mush said another distraction...

Apart from extra conservative support it will add to his own legacy whilst ridding vestiges of Turkey's Secular past and Ataturk's legacy unfortunately.

Lots of opposition from from abroad inc UNESCO saying its place on the Worlds Heritage list, will have to re-assessed and the funding that comes with it lost ,but no real threat to the Nationalists apart from the loss of prestige, As the Directorate of Religious Affairs ministry who will take over its running, their budget allocation is massive, equal to those of the Foreign, Energy, and Culture and Tourism ministries combined . "loads cash"

I am not sure the detractors of the change have a leg to stand on , although annoying the rise in Nationalism and use as a political pawn, all they need to do in Justification is cite the double standard with... the change of Mosque to Cathedral of the famous Córdoba Cathedral in Spain ..

But for tourists it is actually better as like the Blue Mosque ( working Mosque) it will still be open access to the public and even better the admission will now be Free. plus the Church history will still be kept intact eg normally in Mosques iconary with the human form is not allowed ...but the Hagia Sophia famous frescoes will be kept in situ ..

Re: Mosque or Church

I think for most (foreign) tourists, the attraction is the building and the fabulous history of the building. The fact that it is a museum or a mosque will not matter to the tourists.

Re: Mosque or Church

It all depends on the attitude of the religious turks to the tourists in the future. Most mosques I ve been to in Turkey are fairly relaxed about tourists but not all .
I ve been to Hagia Sophia about a dozen times over the years and I for one will not feel as comfortable wandering around it knowing it is now a place of worship for believers

Re: Mosque or Church

As it was declared to be a museum by Ataturk and to promote his secular ideals, keeping the state and religions seperate, this decision is surely an insult to Ataturk and I'm sure that is an offence in Turkey. I don't anticipate any arrests though.

Re: Mosque or Church

A recent Poll in Turkey said Turks were becoming on the whole less religious, and that was reflected in a recent June Poll when asked if supported the Hagia Sophia becoming a mosque, in a country whose national religion is Islam only half agreed it was a good idea.

When Turks were asked if thought the debate is being raised now, primarily to serve a political agenda . More than 55% in the survey conducted by the Turkish pollster Metropoll said its main purpose is to distract and create an argument that could be used to influence Conservatives if an early elections were needed.
