I went in november either 3 or 4 years ago and didnt see anything like that, actually that sounds more like Sheffield than the Northern Cyprus I saw. Certainly the standard of driving around Famagusta and from Ercan airport to there didnt seem much, if any, different to in UK.

Re: Visit to trnc

Mills, there is a very good hotel close to the Harbour in Girne/ Kyrenia is called the British just Google it. Stayed there on and off for many years.Current cost is 65 Euros for two people in a double room including Breakfast.Single is 45 Euros again with Breakfast. ( Just booked for October ) Another Hotel is called The Colony, it's 5 * and includes a full English Breakfast freshly cooked. This was last year 90 GBP's per night for a double room.Bar and Pool on the roof. Very Nice. You can walk down to the harbour but after Dinner and a few glass'es then a taxi would be appropiate.

Re: Visit to trnc

i dont like Mağusa/Famagusta or the area although we have travelled from there by bus to Girne..and ive also hired a car there.
However you want to travel its easy to get around..this is a small island.
İ think Girne is an excellent place to stay and there are loads of small hotels and pensions around the harbour which are not over the top price wise.
We have stayed a couple of times at the Golden Lion on the harbour its very small only about 8 rooms but comfortable and in the same area there are half a dozen similar places.
Theres a big supermarket on the outside of Girne where most expats shop for british food..although why i dont know as food on Cyprus is great.
Ferry from Alanya takes about 3to 4 hours depending on the weather.
İ dont know what the fare is this year ..maybe Val will explain.

We booked the fast ferry on Fergun shipping, the office is just by the Red Tower in Alanya. Cost was 128 TL plus 10TK port tax return. Before departure from Cyprus Port you have to go into the Fergun Shipping office and pay the port tax which is 36TL. We stayed at a beautiful hotel in Bellapais which is 2km above Kyrenia. Bellapais Monastery Hotel, booked through Late Rooms.com and we paid 50 for 2 night B&B. The breakfast was excellent full English or other choices and waiter service. The evening meal was also excellent value average main course price was 20TL. Taxies not too expensive from the port to our hotel was 15 TL. There is a free bus shuttle service from the hotel to Kyrenia 3 times daily, morning, lunchtime and early evening. Car hire for three days is approx 68. Buses are not as regular as they are in Turkey, but we got the local bus to Famagusta for 20TL return. Didn't rate Famagusta as much as I did Kyrenia. Saw the British Hotel which is very central, but would use the Bellapais Monastery if I went again.

Re: Visit to trnc

Thankyou all, I will take at look at the hotels you have all suggested, I've had a look at Fergun Shipping website so just need to decide which day to go, anybody know if I need to book the ferry crossing much in advance or would a week in advance be enough? We will be going around 19th of September.

We booked hotel about 10 weeks in advance but the ferry crossing only 3 days before. The ferry wasn't full.

Will try and book a hotel over the weekend, and leave the ferry until I arrive in Alanya. Thankyou.

Re: Visit to trnc

We stay at the Pia Bella Hotel about 20 minutes walk from town centre/harbour. Excellent accommodation, the staff there are friendly, prices at the Hotel compere with anywhere in the town, the Harbour bars/restaurants don't come recommended because of the prices. Two pools in lovely gardens, good buffet breakfast.
