Re: Sailors on TLF?

For sailing on the sea with a boat registered in the owner’s country, the “official” Turkish view is that you should have whatever is required to sail on your own country’s seas. So for a UK owner – nothing at all! However, some countries require an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) and there have been occasional reports that Turkish coast guards have asked to see this.

The RYA Day Skipper certificate will, from memory, give you exemption from the ICC exam, and you can get the certificate free if you are an RYA member, or for 45 if not, renewable every 5 Years.

I have sailed a Gib’sea 33 here for 9 years and have never been asked for any proof of competence, but I did get an ICC about 5 years ago, as I could, like you, claim exemption. Incidentally, Turkish coastguards do like to see a pristine Turkish flag!

But, most of this (except the flag) is probably irrelevant as you would be sailing on a lake. Inland waters often have their own rules and regulations. If there is a requirement to prove competence, then maybe your Day Skipper certificate would be acceptable, or an ICC. I also wondered whether “the captain needs a licence” simply means you need to register the boat for use on the lake.

Good luck anyway, and maybe a lake sailor will come up with more relevant information.
