Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

...also, anyone who has any spare time at all to go to the Shelter and take out even just one dog for a walk would be so welcome. We have several dogs who have been at the shelter for years now and spend most of their lives locked in their cages, so being taken out for a walk or just being given a bit of attention and affection really does make a huge difference to their lives. So, anyone living in the area that has maybe an hour or two a week to spare would be so welcome, even if you just focus on one dog who has been there for over a year and just nip in when you can with a lead to take him/her for a walk. It can be quite overwhelming when you first go there and many people just come once and get too upset at the volume of dogs at the shelter, so don't know where to start - by choosing one or two of our "long termers", you really would be changing their lives.

Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

Where is the dog/cat shelter located? Does the dolmus pass by it or go near to it?

The Turgutreis shelter is just before Countryranch, on the way to Islamhanleri. It's marked on Wikimapia here: Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world!

Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

Keep up the good work -- must admit I have been there a few times to take sacks of dog food and it does upset me very much !
The dogs are lovely and they look at you with their big sad eyes -- OMG So heartbreaking - I wish I could have some more dogs - but hubby says a firm NO !!

... just to add an urgent appeal for one of the Turgutreis Shelter dogs - we have a really gorgeous dog called Ballim (my Honey) who was injured badly by a car and both her back legs are paralyzed. She is receiving some treatment twice a week at the country ranch next door, but is deteriorating rapidly as the Shelter is not the right place for her - she desperately needs a home where someone can give her daily physio, take her out in an adapted dog-wheelchair and if possible get her swimming. If we can't find a good home for this wonderful dog she will continue to go downhill. Despite her injuries, she is a really delightful dog, so full of life and energy, very affectionate, eager to please and very, very pretty (golden and gorgeous!). If anyone could either give her a full time home or alternatively Foster her, it would be wonderful - her owner abandoned her after the accident and the Shelter vet doesn't spend time with her so she only gets physio when the volunteers and committee members can give her some time - she needs and deserves full time care and attention. It is a lot to take on as she is disabled, but even a few solid weeks of Foster care would greatly help and if we can then keep getting her fostered out, she would really improve. If she stays in the Shelter her muscles will deteriorate and she will have no hope of ever walking again. If anyone is interested please PM me - we have full medical reports on her which we can pass on. Thank you. S

Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

Does anyone know if the turgutreis animal shelter has a contact email, i recently met a beautiful stray dog whilst there on holiday which i would like to sponsor or pay for her care in some way if someone would go and rescue her, i would ideally like to bring her to live with us in the UK but am not sure how to go about that and also it would be expensive and im certainly not rich i just need to help this dog.
Thanks

Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

Hi Loulla, I don't imagine they have internet up there. My husband and I walked some dogs a while back but I've since heard that all the dogs have been left out to become street dogs as this was seen as a better life for them.
I hope someone can update me on this as I would gladly walk some dogs again, I will get some dried food for the stray dog outside the Aydem Hotel and feed him if I find him tomorrow. There are some wonderful volunteers here in Turgutreis who fund raise and clean at the Turgutreis shelter. I've been away for a while so I've lost touch but hopefully will catch up soon.

Re: Turgutreis Dog Shelter

HI
I went on Monday and walked a few dogs, it's not much but at least a few dogs got out that wouldn't have. If you want to go you can become a member of the group on Facebook then contact them there.
They have a fundraiser today, Friday 4th in Turgutreis (2-5pm) I believe in the square behind the boats.
The dogs have not been released!
