wanting to verify dog transport info
Hello All,
I have three dogs (two small, one medium) and will be relocating to Adana in February from the US. I wanted to verify some info I have read.
First, is it true that a dog cannot fly cargo unaccompanied? I will not be able to bring my medium siz dog until the weather warms a bit, likely early March. I spoke with a couple of airlines that did not indicate this would be an issue.
Also, I hear that its only one pet per passport. I will be travelling with my sister and the two small dogs on the trip over, so no problem. If I am able to ship my larger dog in March, will I be able to pick her up at the airport or will there be some record that I have already brought a dog into Turkey?
Any info is greatly appreciated!!

Re: wanting to verify dog transport info
Well, I only found out AFTER I had brought my three cats in, that it was one animal per passport. I didn't have any problems with the number of cats. I did fly on the same flight as my cats, and thought at the time that it was necessary to accompany them, but this may not be true. Someone will be along shortly to put me right and also give you more information. Good luck with your move.

Re: wanting to verify dog transport info
The rule is that it's only one pet per ADULT passenger. Some people have got away with bringing more than one animal or using a child to accompany the animal, but do you want to take that chance?
If you accompany the animal on the same flight, there's no need for an Import Licence. However, if the animal is flown unaccompanied, an Import Licence is a must and that must be applied for in Turkey. The animal doesn't have to belong to the person accompanying it. So, if you have someone on the flight who is willing to take responsibility for it, there's no problem.
I believe that there have been some recent changes to the regulations regarding unaccompanied animals flying as cargo. I'd suggest you get that information from your local airline cargo agent.
Just be aware that not all cargo or passenger planes have heating or an oxygen
supply in the hold. Again, you should check this with the airline's agent, and then check it again prior to the flight booking.
I'd suggest that you use a local kennels with experience of importing and exporting animals. It's expensive, but it depends on how much you value your pets.
As far as I know, there isn't any record kept of previous imports. So, unless you're a regular importer, there shouldn't be any problem.
We brought our 2 Springer Spaniels with us from England 2 years ago and it cost around £3,000 (5,800 USD) in total. To us, it was well worth it.

Re: wanting to verify dog transport info
KKOB did you come from Kent? We came from Canterbury (not flying, of course, that was Gatwick) and used Par Air who handled everything, except the DEFRA and veterinary parts. I also booked the flights myself, with Excel Air. It all seemed to work very well. I didn't know there was a limit to the number of animals you could bring, but I wouldn't have left any of them behind. It was bad enough that one of my cats was too old and too unwell to bring and I had to have him put to sleep just before I came over. (I did think, though, that if I had been driving to Scotland I would have taken him even though the journey would have been just as long). I can't remember how much it cost now, but I think it was about £1,000, plus 30 lira at Dalaman, which was for a reason that I never did fathom out. I rang around the airlines to find one which regularly transported animals, my husband having first booked our flights and then finding out that that particular airline didn't have the facilities for transporting animals. It is well worth checking everything yourself, even if you do use a registered animal "transporter". (Think I have rambled again).

Re: wanting to verify dog transport info
Harem,
I was brought up in Maidstone and moved away from there in the late 80s.
Spent the last few years in England living around Northampton.
We flew the dogs out of Bristol using Overhill Kennels as our agents. They got all paperwork sorted for us. They've got a very good relationship with MyTravel. They delivered the dogs to the plane, passed copies of their paperwork directly to the pilot and reminded him to adjust the cargo hold temperature. Despite all this extra work, they were about 40% cheaper than using any of the importers/exporters based around the London airports.
When we cleared passport control at Dalaman, we could hear the dogs barking. They were merrily going round the luggage carousel in their travel boxes.! Didn't see any officials, and went through customs with them without any problems.

Re: wanting to verify dog transport info
Thank you to everyone, I am impressed with the quick replies! It sounds like the easiest way would be to pay for someone who wants a free flight to Europe or Turkey to fly with the dog.
