"Just in time" cat
When we first moved to Romania in 2005, we arranged to rent a house from someone in Piatra Neamt where I would be working. The evening we went to the house to take over the keys, the owner and his wife showed us a little cat, only a few weeks old that somehow had turned up at their door the previous night crying for food, no sign of the mother.
So needless to say, despite having survived happily “pet-less” during all our previous travels, we succumbed. As the cat (Miku) grew bigger, we gradually let it go outside until eventually it would come and go at will, always returning early evening for grub. It has remained very nervous of other people, “growling” and then zipping under the bed if anyone came to the house.
We decided to bring Miku with us to Turkey. Got all the pet passport, micro-chip, registration etc., etc. For the last couple of months we’ve been packing stuff into boxes, and the cat obviously had twigged something is going on. Perhaps the fact we were training it to be comfortable in its carrying box by putting its food in it had something to do with it!
Anyway, we were booked to fly last Friday and the packers / movers came on the Tuesday. Growl, zip, under the bed – where it stayed most of the day listening to all the banging and thumping and shouting and stomping about. After the packers left we let it outside in the afternoon – you guessed it – gone.
Wednesday, looked all round, no cat,. Thursday, mobilised help from the office, drove round all the neighbours’ houses with a photo. No luck. So we really just resigned ourselves that it was gone.
Friday morning up at 04.30, one last look round the garden, no sign of puss and that really had to be it. So with heavy hearts we locked the cases, turned off the lights and made to put the luggage in the car.
Opened the front door to leave – and one very frightened Miku is right there. Some moments of suspense as it makes up its mind whether to scoot or come in – and in it came. Grabbed it, stuffed it in the box and off we went. Waow!
After that, getting through the airport security was an anti-climax, no drama. Only some difficulty in disentangling the cat from my neck to put it back in the box. at Bucharest security. And then to Dalaman, nobody asked to look at cat passport, papers, etc. etc.
So all in all that’s really a bit of a non-story but we’re very pleased that Miku came back “just in time”
