Dangerous dog or not?
My poor little fur-baby Cookie was attacked by a much bigger dog on tuesday. The other dog lives down the street (he and Cookie often have a good bark at each other through the fence when we pass) and is usually confined to the owners place but someone left a gate open and it escaped. Cookie was mooching around outside and the dog made straight for him, Cookie is only little (miniature pinscher) and made a bolt for our gate which he could get through but the other dog would not have been able to. But it caught him just as he was going in and grabbed him around the middle, pulled him out of the gate and threw him. If he had got hold of Cookie's neck, or if my in-laws had not been around to immedıately see the attacker off, Cookie may have been killed. As it is he has some very deep puncture wounds either side of his tummy and lots of bruising, not to mention the internal aches and pains he must be feeling. He doesn't quite know what to do with himself at the moment as he can't get comfy at all, & is hating the daily visit to the vet - infection being the major concern, but he should be ok.
I can't work out how i feel about the other dog. At first i was raving - my fur-baby is just that - my baby! But now i don't know what to think. Cookie is no angel either - he chases the odd cyclist, has a bark that more than makes up for his small size and frequently raids binbags despite being fed better than many humans. But he's never hurt anyone. And now i keep worrying about the other dog escaping again. Cookie is confined to the house for his recouperation but i don't want to have to keep him in forever more. Do you think this sort of behaviour can be a one-off in dogs, or i am going to have to worry about this constantly? Advice please....
I should add that the owners are nice people and came and apologised and enqired after Cookie.

Re: Dangerous dog or not?
It sounds as if your dog is a nuisance, so if you keep it in "odd cyclists" and bin-bag owners will be much happier, not to mention people who hate listening to barking dogs.
It wont be a 'one off', so keep him in forever.

Re: Dangerous dog or not?
What is each of the dogs like with other dogs? If your dog is aggressive towards other dogs then it is dangerous and vice versa with the big one.
However, ive found that many small dogs try to act fierce especially around big dogs, maybe its a way of not being intimidated. Now its had a bit of a scare maybe your dog has learned a valuable lesson and will behave itself.

Parrot
Maybe i was being unfairly diplomatic - i wouldn't call him a nuisance exactly. He only barks at strangers approaching the house, not just for fun. And the only bin bags he raids are ours, we dont have any immediate neighbours being out in a village.
He will bark at strange dogs approaching the house but other than that isn't aggressive to other dogs - plays quite happily with the horse of a dalmation in Olu that could easily have him for a snack

Re: Dangerous dog or not?
We have a number of street dogs in Yalikavak and also owned dogs that are free to roam the streets. They seem much calmer in summer when food is easier to come by but things can get rough out of season. Cats have been savaged to death apparently and this recent winter a friends gorgeous little dog was also a victim and was so badly savaged he had to be put to sleep. The main culprit is a nasty male dog who also attacks people and has been removed to be a guard dog somewhere but İ was more concerned about the normally placid dogs who joined in the attack. İt goes to show when instinct kicks in all dogs can be dangerous.
İ would keep your dog confined in your garden and take him for walks outside but wouldn't risk him running about. Some dogs are born bullies and will go for any smaller dog. Plus this dog is not going to come round wag it's tail and apologise - dogs that are enemies usually remain so. He will attack if he gets a second chance and this time it could be nasty - remember what packs of hounds do to foxes .

Re: Dangerous dog or not?
I would agree with Peaceplant.. once a dog dislikes another it does not change its mind..we have the problem with the restaurant next to us. There lovely terrier and mine can just not get on so they both have to tied up when they are both here..Both dogs get on with the kitten but not with each other!!! They have their own pecking order. I wold not let Cookie wander on his own.. but maybe the owners if they are as nice as you say will make more of an effort to make sure the dog does not escape.
Hope cookie feeling better soon..

Re: Dangerous dog or not?
Alan i knew he was daft, didn't know he was that daft! I will have words with him immediately!
Peaceplant that's just terrible about the dogs there - glad the really mean one has been moved elsewhere. We seem to be lucky here there aren't that many street dogs where we are though i expect there are some that will hang around the restaurants near the Ghost Town.
Thank you Lynda Cookie looks a bit more like his-self again today, looks like he might be considering jumping on the sofa again soon which is a good sign!
I think you are right i will have to try and keep him confined to the garden - i have several dozen escape routes to try and dog-proof! I just don't want to have to keep him indoors all the while - we'd both soon go crackers!
