I saw my first one in the UK about 25 years ago. I didn't realise I'd have to move to Turkey to own one though.
You need to do a lot of research about the breed. They're very intelligent dogs and can often be very aloof. Unless you are very hard with them in the early months, they have a tendency to ignore commands and do things "in my own time". However, if you're too hard, they'll also ignore you. You have to build a partnership with them that's unlike most other dog breeds.
They also need a huge amount of exercise and food everyday, together with a lot of stimulating toys to play with. Molly's got 3 other dogs to keep her entertained ! LOL
Don't get one from a "puppy farm" and make sure you see both the dam and sire. Beware of anyone who offers to get you one. The best place to start is at your local vets. They'll know reputable breeders and owners.
Don't forget that you're looking at a male dog that could weigh 9 stone, or a female weighing in at 8 stone, and is quite capable of taking you for a walk, whether you want it to or not!
If you get the opportunity, go to the Kangal Festival in Sivas. It's held during the first or second weekend in July. The Kangal website I've given you the link too will publish the dates for the 2008 gathering when it's been decided.
Take a look at this site for starters
