Bringing two cats into Turkey
I just wondered if anybody who has done this can tell me the timescale for injections etc. and also if they need a pet passport. As it's a non-EU country I think they don't. We are planning to move out permanently at the end of July next year. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
I think there has been some information about this in the past. However, you must first go to your vet who will advise you on all the injections your cats will need. Also he/she will help you with the DEFRA forms which have to be completed. I can't remember the timescale for this now, but your vet will be able to give you all the information you need. I did this three years ago with three cats, but have been told that it is only one cat person, so, hopefully, there are two of you coming to live here, at least.

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
rabies injections = it must be done within 6 months of travel BUT also before 2 weeks of travel
also it has to be done by a defra approved vet. so contact defra for all the paperwork, its quite easy...
pets need a rabies jag and a clean bill of health, the bill of health has to be given within 72 or 78 hours of travel.. again by the defra approved vet.
ask your own vet is he defra approved, if not, ask defra they will suggest one.
defra send the certificates to the vet and he completes nearer the time.
No turkey are not part of the pet passport scheme, so you dont need one, just the defra paperwork
and for your next question - which airline??
try cyprus turkish airlines... www.kthy.net i came from gatwick to dalaman, april 07 with 2 dogs and a cat, it was all fine, they dont use animal handlers (ie middlemen) and fly all year round..cost was for my 3 £180 total..

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
Thanks very much for your replies. We'd need an airline that flies out of Manchester to Bodrum. I've heard of Animal Airlines based in Cheshire. Has anybody used them to transport their pets?

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
Hiya, just wanted to let you know that we brought a dog out and it was really easy. I know you say Manchester to Bodrum but if you were to fly KTHY London to Izmir, you can take your pets as excess baggage on the same flight as you travel on for around £6 per kilo. The chap we dealt with was fantastic called Adnan based in London very very helpful tel. 02079304851, he would guide you through the whole process, let you know what you need and advise the check in staff that you are traveling with accompanying pets.

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
I know nothing on the subject to be honest Jakebeak but are you 1000% certain you will be remaining in Turkey throughout this winter and the next, etc?
Its just that Ive read on this forum so often of people returning home during winter and not knowing what to do with the pets they took into Turkey. You will have to put any animal you return to the UK into quarantine for 6 months remember - very expensive and inpractical if you are only coming back for month or two.
If you havent done a winter, maybe it would be far kinder to your cats (and easier) to find them a temporary home here while you go and spend a winter in your new country. If you then decide you can hack it and wont be returning, then arrange for them to come over.

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
We're definitely not coming back to Britain. We're emigrating for good next July, so they're going to be coming with us next summer. A winter in Didim can't be as bad as one in Manchester - hoho! Thanks for your thoughts though.

Re: Bringing two cats into Turkey
hya we came out dec. 07. with 2 cats. contact defra u need forms for export of live animals. to turkey.they will ask u for your local vet. so that they can send the forms to them. u need to take proof of innoculations and sterilization, i would do this 4 months before, then the vet will , with your confirmed travel arrangements, etc. time, date of departure, will book the cats in for innoculations, health check, etc. rabies being the most important, and he will then fill in his part of the export form with the innoculation batch numbers, date etc. we could only find turkish airlines to take the cats in the hold, then internal flight from instanbul one travelled with us in the cabin. turkish airlines will charge u excess baggage for the cats!! other flights airlines could charge u more. go on-line as we did in the uk and buy the right carrier basket with a water bowl. that is important. not many airlines we found exspecially charter flights will acepy cats. we had no problems as long as u have the paperwork from defra and your vet. hope this helps.
