Re: Dogs transportation/importation

Hello phil
We moved to Alanya this year, and as a GB pet lover we bought our 3 cats and a german shepherd dog out, it cost us £1100.00 to bring all 4 here useing Animal airlines from Birmingham airport, when you get to Antalya airport your dog will be off loaded from the plane before the luggage and brought straight to you in the area you collect your cases.
I will try and find the contact details for the company i used as i called many carriers and found these to be the cheapest.
You will already know about the rabies injection system if you have been in touch with defrer.

We brought 2 Springer Spaniels out with us last year. In total it cost about £1,200 per dog which included all inoculations, chipping and paperwork.

There is a very good kennels near Bristol that handled it all for us. If you need info on them send me an e-mail or PM.

Denise is right, a few of the airlines will allow you to take pets as 'excess luggage' so the charge is ALOT less than sending them Cargo!

Im not sure if Turkish airlines do this, but i know BA do & with the new flights into Izmir, its perfect!

Sandra,

You will still have to pay to transport the pet, but as you are not sending it cargo, the cost is ALOT lower, usually around £100 - £200 depending on the size of the animal.

Shipping pets this way does have its disadvantages tho, the weather is a big problem, if the temperature goes above 85c, the airlines usually will not allow the animals to fly (for there own safety) also, the smaller aircraft does not have the space to take this kind of excess luggage.

The best thing to do is to call BA, ask about taking your pet with you & also about costs for you, they can then make reservations all at the same time.

You have to be aware tho, shipping pets this way is not guarenteed (if you ship them with a private cargo company, you know what date, time etc your animal will be flying) in a scheduled flight, it really does come down to the day of departure, if its to hot, its highly likley that your pet will not be able to travel.

because of that, most airlines have an embargo from May - September when no pets can be taken as excess luggage!

there are two useful sites here
and here

You are NOT allowed to send your pet to Turkey unaccompanied, as Turkey isn't in the "pet travel scheme".
All animals are to have a certificate to show they have been checked for good health and the required Rabies vaccine.
When i enquired about taking animals as excess baggage i was told NO, they have to be transported as "LIVE ANIMALS IN TRANSIT" for insurance purposes, maybe this depends on the airline?

You also have to remember its a 4 hour flight and the animals are caged as soon as you leave them at the departure gate for cargo, so in all our animals were caged for 9 hours from leaveing our uk home until we got to Alanya.
As they were transported as live animals this ensured they were looked after and notices put on the cages that they were to be fed and given water every hour.

You can't fly BA into Dalaman. You have to go via Istanbul. You then have to make sure that the flight from Istanbul to Dalaman can take animals too.

However, MyTravel take dogs and cats as cargo throughout the season to Dalaman from Bristol as their cargoholds are temperature controlled. In fact they turn the temperature up in the hold for animals otherwise it would be far too cold at 35,000 feet.

( You can send them on a separate flight, but you must have an Import Licence which has to be applied for Ankara )

If your pet travels as cargo, you do not have to accompany it! the cargo company take care of all the legal stuff for you!

I know many airlines take pets as excess luggage, but not sure about when flying to Turkey (BA is the only 1 that i know of for sure!) but when flying else where the majority of major airlines will take pets as excess luggage. from where i work we regularly use Continental, British airways, Delta, United, Virgin etc, these are almost always shipping pets to the states, so 8-12 hr flights & the pets are taken as excess luggage.
