Taking pets back to the UK
Does Turkey come under the new pet passport scheme? Sorry i dont know much about this at all so i might get some of it wrong!
When i looked at the DEFRA sire Turkey wasnt on it.
Obviously if us living in Turkey didnt work out and we wanted to return to the Uk could i bring my pets without having to quarentine them?

Re: Taking pets back to the UK
I am pretty sure that any pets coming from turkey into the UK have to go thru 6 mths quarentine.
I will see if i can find any links ...
Turlkey is definatly not on DEFRA's list of countries who take part in the passport scheme.
so yes 6 mths quarentine would be needed.
DEFRA have some info on quarentine procedures here

Re: Taking pets back to the UK
Hello
I am living in Turkey and have flown our dog out with us and on a recent visit to our local vets was watching with interest as he was crating up a couple of dogs.....it turns out that an english couple returning to England were going to live in France for six months first as this would count as the dogs quarantine, although still living with them , they were then able to take said dogs back into the UK as france was part of the pet passport scheme.....hope this helps

Re: Taking pets back to the UK
I have read on the net of a couple coming to live in Turkey via portugal, they rented in Portugal then travelled to Turkey, later when they sold thier property in Turkey returned again to Portugal travelled rented etc.. then returned to UK. Not sure how this worked but I am sure it was illegal, but the animals did have or started out with a UK pet passport and chip.
When you see the Dutch Germans and Belgiums visiting Turkey with their pet in tow then this is obviously an option.

Re: Taking pets back to the UK
I found this on the American Consulate's website, and is pretty thorough information.
Travelling with Pets
If you plan to travel abroad with your pet, you will need to provide some documents to Turkish Customs. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide that we hope will help you through this process. If you intend to travel with more than one pet, the same procedure applies to each pet.
INBOUND
When you bring your pet to Turkey, the only document you need is a valid health certificate. Airport Customs may note in your passport that you are bringing in a pet. This is normally the only requirement you face at Customs at the Istanbul Airport.
NOTE:
You can also send your pet to Turkey as unaccompanied cargo. Your pets need their vaccination card and an International Health Certificate. If the certificate includes the vaccination, you don’t need the vaccination card as a separate document. At Customs you should personally meet your pet with your passport. After your pet goes through the Customs veterinarian check at the cargo section, the Customs officer will annotate your passport with your pet’s information. This completes the delivery.
OUTBOUND
STEP 1: Check your pet’s health certificate for the shot records. The rabies shot is important, as it is only valid for one year in Turkey. If your pet’s rabies shot is not valid, it must have had a rabies shot at least 30 days before the departure date.
STEP 2: Go to the municipality (Belediye) where your residence is located with the valid health certificate. The Municipality officer will provide you a certificate of origin (this document is to ensure that there is no quarantine for any contagious diseases within the region). This document is valid only for 72 Hours.
STEP 3: Buy Damga Pulu (official government) stamps in the Turkish Lira equivalent of approximately $3, as of the date of this document. You may buy these from a newspaper kiosk or from a local stationary shop. (You will need them for the fourth step). Please check your municipality for the price and amount of stamps (Damga Pulu) needed since prices are likely to change due to inflation.
STEP 4: Two days before you leave, take your pet’s valid health certificate, shot records, certificate of origin from the municipality, and stamps to the Istanbul Customs Veterinarian in Erenkoy. The address of which is: Bagdat Caddesi No.333, Erenkoy, (216) 302 4103. The Istanbul Customs Veterinarian will issue an International Health Certificate for your pet. The certificate costs the Turkish Lira equivalent of approximately $10, as of the date of this report. Since the certificate is valid only for 48 hours before departure, it is important to carefully time its issuance.
NOTES:
At the airport, airport customs will ask to see your original passport and ticket while loading your pet.
Do not forget to provide a cage for your pet. If you don’t have a cage, it may be possible to buy one from the airlines but check with them first.
Do not forget to make reservations for your pet with the airline. The earlier you inform the airline, the better it will be.
You may also send your pet as unaccompanied cargo. The procedure is the same. Airport customs will again need to see your passport.
· During summer 2000 there was an embargo on Delta and United Airlines against carrying pets as cargo due to the hot weather. Check with your carrier to determine if this embargo applies when you plan to travel. You may be able to take cats or small size dogs in the cabin with a cage. Check with the airline for the allowable size and weight of pets that can travel in the cabin.
