Cats Plane Journey
Hi, this might sound like a silly question but Im moving to Turkey end of this month, and cat is going too.
Does anybody have any good suggestions regarding ummmmm his toilet procedure if you know what I mean on the way there. We are more than likely going to have to stop at Istanbul and then onwards to Bodrum but the poor little think wont keep it in all that time.
Is it wise to get some kind of lead to let him out, but taking into account cats natures (not like dogs) I think he'd be more frightened being let out.
Im very worried about him and how to make his journey as non-traumatic as possible.
Any suggestions would be good
Many thanks
Lorraine

Re: Cats Plane Journey
If you are flying over then your cat will be in a cage/box and will use that as its toilet so to speak. When we bought our cats over the carriers put plenty of ripped newspaper in their boxes. When we arrived in Antalya our cats were bought to us before any cases came through.
If you are able to have access to your cat during a stop over or break in Istanbul, a harness type lead should be used as a cat can twist its way out of a collar attached to a lead

Re: Cats Plane Journey
Hi Lorraine
We used Animal Airlines who made the boxes to transport them in the hold which is heated and flew with Thomas cook, on the same flight.
I have since learnt you can actually have your animal with you in the cabin on certain flights and have them transported as excess baggage, this works out cheaper.
You would have to check with your flight compant which way they will allow you to do it, if you havent already done so.
This was discussed before on here, you can find it by clicking HERE

Re: Cats Plane Journey
When I brought my cat over he was in a large airline approved cage that had enough room for a litter box and I used clumping cat litter. It was 24 hours between leaving Canada and arriving in Istanbul when I finally got to see him and over all the litter box had been used but was not a bad as I had thought it would be considering the amount of time he was in there although we did have 12 hr stop over in Amsterdam where he was taken to KLM's "pet hotel" were they let him out in an enclosed area to stretch and they also feed him.

You see, your cat will have a better looked after during the journey than you are, so there is nothing to worry about.

Re: Cats Plane Journey
Hello
Livinginthe sun
I am also from Norfolk and am hopefully moving to Turkey soon. I also have a cat and have found this post comforting. Does anyone know if cats are sedated before a flight?

Re: Cats Plane Journey
It is recommended that you dont sedate cats or dogs before flying, your vet will confirm this as you need a health certificate from him before your cat can fly.
You should find more inf at http://www.defra.gov.uk/

Re: Cats Plane Journey
I totaly agree with Mark on this. My vet also said not to sedate my cat, and considering he is 14 years old and had never flown before he did quite well and adjusted fast. So fast infact the the 20 kilo bag of cat food I brought from Canada ended up being donated to a lady that lives in my neighborhood that rescues the street cats as mine quickly decided that he liked the lamb flavored cat food here that was not easily available in Canada.
