taking Dog from Turkey to UK via Greece??

Good morning everyone!

I am considering returning to the UK for a while and would like to take my dog with me.

I know that if I travel from Turkey to UK Tia will have to be in quarantine for 6 months.

However, I have been told that if I travel with her to Greece then get to UK from there she will not have to be in quarantine as Greece is an EU country?

I dont understand this as leaving Turkey to go to Greece I would have thought would still involve a quarantine???

Anybody have any info on this?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Debbie
Probably Greece doesn't have quarantine?? Might be wrong, but I think the UK is the only place that does have quarantine (when travelling in that direction). Think then because you are in a EU country you would have to get Tia passported to travel back to the UK.
(PS have the cds arrived yet??)

Incorrect, unless you spend six months in Greece before travelling.

The only way to avoid quarantine is for your animal to use the Pets Travel Sceme (PETS) which allows animals to travel between EU and certain other countries without the need for quarantine. the DEFRA web site has all the info you'll need.

The dog needs to spend 6 months in an EU country under the scheme before being allowed to enter the UK. So whether you take her to Greece, Spain, France etc doesn't matter. The 6 month rule applies.

That is correct as we have just moved to Turkey with our dogs and we used the Pet passport system even though it does not apply to Turkey. We queried the point of returning via an EU country and doing our "quarantine" there and it was confimed as being ok. Vet did tell us that France in particular (and spain to a lesser degree) make a real meal of the passport process and seem to make things difficult - shouldn't surprise us really.

Greece sounds a good bet and please let us know what you find out.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

I did think that I had misunderstood the reasons behind it and I couldnt understand why travelling to Greece then meant you could return straight to the UK, as the dog still had been living in Turkey!!

If I hear anything else I will let you know.

P.S - Harem, the CD's still havent arrived!! I really think that there is a CD napping scheme going on here!!!

If the dog was not born in an E.U country then you will not be allowed to transport it to any E.U country under the normal guide lines. i am informed you will have to obtain special permission with good reason, If the dog was born in E.U you will also have to get a certificate from the health authourities in Turkey to show the animal is fit to travel, This is not mentioned on any of Defra sites, I found this out at the airport as i was about to bring our 3 cats and dog to France, i was delayed a day until this was obtained. Then i learnt not all airlines request this, It is to protect them in case the animal dies.
DO NOT travel useing onur air as they will sell you tickets for your animals but they DO NOT have oxygen in their holds and you dog will arrive dead.
We booked with them to our horror but were told we were lucky as some observant luggage handler saw our cats move and knew they had no oxygen in the hold so were off loaded thank god!!
When we explained this to the Embassy, we were told yes you were lucky, they normally just put them on, many have been loaded and never made the flight, and you have no claim what so ever. They will say the animal was unfit for travel.
So use Turkish airlines is my advice if you transport animals to go to France, or Thomas cook if you go direct to UK
