Your support needed....

I am asking for some support for my vet here in Alanya. I have just left him after viewing some pics and a video of the killing of over 100 cats and 40 dogs with strychine poison on the 31st March this year in Mahmutlar ( small town outside Alanya)
This is not a legal procedure here in Turkey and he has taken action against the Mahmutlar belediye. He is looking for letters/contact of support in condeming this action.
As normal whilst contacting turkish media etc he forgot us the Europeans who have an interest in what happens here not only to dogs and cats. This poison could have killed a child for goodness sake they only throw the food to the gound... it does not bear thinking about.
We have 2 excellent kennels here that I know off ( voluntary ones) I suppor them with food every month. There was no need for this to be done. The dogs are not wild, they where not sick and they had not done anything dangerous most have been abandoned and some where pets..
If you feel you could support then send an email to bremensvet@hotmail.com or to my email. If proof is required I have pictures video both from him and newspapers plus an autopsy report.
The sooner you can send something the better as he sees the Antalya valli tomorrow ( I know I know but I only found out today - typical Turk but he is just so lovely and caring)
If any of you kow of any organistaions on animal rights I or yourselves could inform re this we would be so grateful. Lynda
Sorry in my haste I put the email address wrong. I addition you can send to osmanincekara@mynet.com

Hi Lynda,

I have two cats and this worries me when we take them over next year. We have always adopted from RSPCA and find these organistaions have a lot of knowledge and can be of assitance in certain respects. Try giving your vet the attached link regarding IFAW domestic animals and contact details.

http://www.ifaw.org/ifaw/general/default.aspx?oid=559

or RSPCA International who our interested in cruelity cases outside the UK.

or for local orgs:-

Lynda this is awful. When we were in Akyaka we spoke to a lady who is involved with the neuter and release scheme for stray cats and dogs. I just tried searching for info and couldn't find her, but found these websites on the subject:

http://www.actiezwerfhonden.nl/Eng/...hoofdpagina.htm

petition here - http://www.petitiononline.com/aznl1205/petition.html

Fethiye neuter and release programme - http://www.naturewatch.org/foundation/turkey/index.asp

I think I mentioned I recalled seeing so many cats on the streets in turkey with broken legs and injuries which broke my heart I had to look away or move away from them because I couldn't bear to see them! [:0][:0]

I have a cat and if and when I come to Turkey I might have to think long and hard about bringing her along! It took her 10 years to get over my last house move (seriously she never goes out) so god help me when she comes to Turkey she will just die with the trauma.

I once nursed a cat that had been poisoned and it was not a very pleasant experience as the poor animal cried and convulsed for hours until it died! That was when I was a small child around 12 years old. I have never got over that experience to this day!

Hi Lynda,
Got your email and in the process of sending a reply to the vet. In Fethiye we have an excellent organisation website link http://www.straydogsturkey.org/
They vaccinate and neutuer all strays then tag their ears with different coloured tags each year after the annual vaccines have been given, they also have a mobile clinic and visit various locations in Turkey advising on the best treatments for that particular reagion.
It is a shame that all regions of Turkey do not have the same organisation.

Kadin and all: I too had two cats poisoned and it was also a terrible death. Convulsing and frothing at the mouth. It made me quite ill. I believe this can be caused by putting starfish down? as also I lived in a fishing town , so could be easily be obtainable.

I was born into a house with a cat and no no difference. They are all gentle and have lovely characters. If taught when they need to sharpen their claws, I put them outside near a tree. They soon learn as they are very intelligent. Hence to say I have never had furniture ruined. They are clean and always washing themselves especially after eating.

When people say they don't like them, I think they don't know them or haven't experienced the pleasure of them.
