Cost of a new mobile phone?
Hi
Can anyone tell me how much a new pay as you go mobile phone will cost me to buy in Turkey? I've heard they can be expensive - in the UK you get the phone free if you go on contract but I don't want to do that in Turkey.
Regards
Helen

Re: Cost of a new mobile phone?
He wants one with a memory card - video 1 hour - so he can take lots of pictures! I think they are cheaper in UK and as long as I register with customs in Turkey he should be able to use it I think?

You have to make sure the phone is unlocked, so it's usable on any network (if you buy with a contract here in UK, they are usually locked so that they can only be used with the network which supplied it)
You also need to take the receipt with you, so the phone can be registered to the Turkish networks, otherwise they block it after about 30 days.

If you get the make and model you can then check the price. I think all the model numbers are the same across the world.

Re: Cost of a new mobile phone?
Mobile phones are more expensive here in Turkey, the reason is that Turkey impose high customs taxes on them, this is then passed onto the customer. Phones that you can pick up for £20-£30 in the UK are twice that much here. Was the phone your friend lost a top model phone? It does seem a little cheeky to me, that you have kindly offered to replace his phone for him and he is asking for an all singing all dancing top mobile. If I have got it wrong, I apologise now before I get all the usual comments.

Oh yes Jane, you haven't got it wrong - he only wants a Nokai 3250 - nothing else will do - the phone he lost (well had stolen actually) was a Nokia 6630 but he wants to upgrade! Mind you, if I can get a better deal on a 6630 than a 3250 then that is what he will be getting - but he will sulk about it for days I am sure!
Mushtag is right in what he says (of course) so the plan is to buy a sim free, non-contract phone, keep receipt, on arrival in Turkey get certification form showing ownership from customs and put in passport and then register in his name in Turkey with Turkcell (for eg) who will assign an IMEI number to the phone.
I think I've got that right haven't I Mushtag?
The only question I have is, if I am bringing this phone in for my friend, does that mean I can't bring a second mobile (my own slighly less impressive Samsung SGH D50 which Murat has turned his nose up at) into Turkey. My phone is no longer on contract and I had planned to bring proof of ownership with me and register it in Turkey and use it myself as it is adequate for my needs. If I was just coming for a holiday I would stick with 02 but I am coming out to Turkey to live so need a more permanent arrangement?
Regards
Helen
