Turkish Mobiles Abroad.........

Has anyone ever bought a Turkish PAYG Mobile and then tried to use it abroad?

It's just that I did buy a mobile in Turkey and was just tanking up the battery tonight and all I got was an "Emergency" message which presumably means I can't phone normal numbers..............

At present it's no grt sweat but if I happen to be away for more than 6mths I need to be able to tank up the card from abroad. If I can't get a line I can't tank up.....................

Has anybody else had a similar experience or been in a similar situation???

DtB. I don't think that if you are abroad and want to ' Tank Up ' that you will be able to do that. Also, if you are out of the country for longer than 3 months (I think ) then you cannot do so. Maybe I am wrong and another member could correct me. You have to make a call I believe to keep the line open.

I use both my kontor and contract Turkish phones when I am over in the Uk but had to have them both enabled... this was a real performance when I did it but that is over 8 yrs ago... they must have got better orgnaised by now ...surely...please tell me they have.....
I normally get my partner to top up my credit phone in Turkey if I get low..I have had to buy another phone with Uk sim as it was costing me a fortune receiving calls from people on my Turkish phone whilst abroad..eg I was in Dublin and get a call from a customer in Holland...cost me over 30ytl for the very quick call!!!!

Tkx................. I suspect "roaming" hasn't been activated so will have to go back to my main man in Gümbet and ask him how to do it. Got lots of Kontors still on the phone and should be back again at the start of June, so that shouldn't be a problem with that, altho' the guy who sold me the phone told me that as long as you have 100 Kontors on your phone it'll last 6mths before they cut you off..................
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........................

And know the feeling with calls abroad........... Had my French mobile with me in Turkey and 5 days, 3 calls later I'd gone thru' GBP 40,--

Re: Turkish Mobiles Abroad.........

mine does not work in uk, so i only use it in turkey. what i did was i took a uk bought new phone with me ,and when i got to bodrum a/port i went to the customs office and they checked the receipt [ i had from uk shop] then they gave me an authorisation paper, i ttok this into the big phone shop i bodrum , and they put my phone into the turkish system . if you dont do this after about 6 months they block your uk mobile[unlocked uk mobile] it is something to do witj syolen uk mobiles coming in to turkey. you must produce to the custom guy a receipt or he wont give you the slip you need for authorisation in bodrum. i took a copy of this paper he gave me so if i take another mobile i can wave it at the customs guy as he could not speak english and i had to get the guy in the ciggy shop to explain to him what i wanted to do. if you buy a kontors card and dont use it ,i am told it will last 2 years. thats what i do and when i land in bodrum i put it on the phone ,and when i leave to go home i buy another 1 and do the same when i go back. it is much cheaper to buy a uk cheap payg mobile and register it at a/port and just use that 1 when in turkey.turkish payg are much more expensive.

you can get a cheap payg nokia . new for £20 it only took about 15 mins with the custom guy to register uk mobile and of course your uk mobile menu is un english. anyway if you have a old unlocked uk mobile you dont use you can leave it in your turkish home [ thats what we do ] the cheap 1 i am talking about is in car phone w/house. the same 1 in turkey was £40.
