Question Using a global sim in Turkey

Hi: I just got back from Turkey a couple of weeks ago, and when there I couldn't use my phone (with a turkcell sim). The phone was blocked. I'm not too sure how to register the phone for use there, so I'm wondering if anyone has used one of the global sims you can buy here for about £15. If it works okay it sounds great. Top up via credit card, no time limit on credits and of course, could be used anywhere else in the world.
Id be grateful of any feedback about these sims.
Cheers

I think I am correct in this info but others may have different answers. It is not your global sim that is the problem it is the mobile you used. As I understand it: If you take a contract mobile say a UK vodafone and use it as a roaming phone you have no problems. If you take a UK open phone and put a Turkish sim in it will be blocked and you cannot use that phone again in Turkey. It will work back in the UK but not Turkey. If you buy an open phone from any reputable moblie dealer they will register it in your name and you have to have your passport with you. You can then put either a Turkish sim in or the global sim in as the phone has been registered. You will find that you can use this Turkish open mobile back home.

I found all this out the hard way when I took an open phone to Alanya, within minutes of putting a Turkish sim in the phone was blocked. So I purchased a cheap mobile registered it and the shop put the sim in and it worked.

Warning - if using a Turkish pre-paid sim with number and you do not use it again for more than 6 months the credit and number will not work again and you have to get another number so do not put to much credit on before you leave. I do believe you can keep it going but unsure how to, via the Internet. I use Telsim (now Vodafone) and I have not had any problems since.

You are correct in that it is the phone that is blocked not the sim card Andy, but if you take the phone to a Turkcel shop with your passport they will register it for you and you will be able to use it with your Turkish sim card. Not sure by what you mean by prepaid sim if you mean PAYG then if the phone is inactive for 3 months then the kontours are made dormant to reactivate them just purchase kontours when you are next in Turkiye and put them on your phone, you will get the kontours that were dormant plus the new ones you put on, I do this every year. You can top up online in the UK but you have to get a pass code from Turkcel in Turkiye to access the area on there web site where you can do this, much easier just to top up when you get over there, when I am ready to come home I purchase a top up and then put them on my phone at Dalaman on my next visit.
