Re: wireless adsl. be careful
Hi,
When using wireless modems, ALWAYS make sure that you have enabled the security features. This stops anyone 'hacking' in to your connection.
Where possible always use the 'WPA' encryption.

Re: wireless adsl. be careful
I agree with Lolly.
In addition, you can also use Mac filtering. Every computer also has a MAC address so in the settings of your modem you can restrict the access only your computer and the computers of your friends.
Another option you can stop broadcasting your essid id. essid id is the name of your network. Your neighbours can see it when they scan the netweorks around the area. For example, you give a name only the three family members know say "maviska" and stop broadcasting this name and arrange settings in your computer and the computers of the other families so that they automatically connect to this network whenever they start their computers.
You can find the instructions how to mac filter and stop essid id broadcasting in the manual of your modem.
Also it is better to change the WPA password and the name of your network (essid) from time to time.

Re: wireless adsl. be careful
yes, i think i have to learn more about computers and internet , i didnt even think that it is so easy just to open your computer and to use others net for free and i didnt think that the nabour on the left had enough money to buy such a big house but has no 30 YTL per month to by his own adsl. my husbands mother saw him recently crossing the garden with lap top in search of my net. after some attempts he went back home.

Not only can they use your connection if you have shared folders than can also access your documents etc. So enable those security features as soon as you can.

Re: wireless adsl. be careful
You need to make your network very secure using wpa-psk as a minimum. Filtering by mac address and hiding your ssid are also best practices. In the UK most adsl suppliers that supply the router will automatically enable this but if you do it yourself there is a tendency to get it working and do no more. This enables anyone with any knowledge to connect to your network and grab your information. There are many freely available tools that can grab all your personal information once someone gets access to your pc remotely. The implications are far worse than someone just getting 'free' internet.
