Cleaning up disc drive.
Anyone got a routine for cleaning up your PC disc drive.
I have an 80G drive which ran out of space this morning, I've deleted all the temp files, movies etc I can think of and now have 19G free, but I'm sure I could free up some more space.
Cheers,
TJD

Re: Cleaning up disc drive.
Uninstall any programs you are not using.
Do a search for files larger than say 5mb and that will give you a a pointer where space is being used. Don't delete them though unless you are sure you know they are self contained files i.e. zip file downloads and not part of an installed program you want.
Do a defrag of your drive.

Agree with Martyn get rid of unwanted or out dated programmes. Also e-mails can take up a bit if you need to keep them run the compact them will give you a little bit more.

I should have said earlier I'd uninstalled a few programs.

I don't know dos commands very well, how would I list them and only displaqy files larger than a certain size? Can I output the list to a file instead of the screen? Do you mean just listing each dir in turn and watching for the larger file sizes?
Do a defrag of your drive. Will do.

Re: Cleaning up disc drive.
Just go to start - search - for files and folders - and search for files - *.* which is larger than 5000kb.
If you still have problems I will create a document with screenshots.

Re: Cleaning up disc drive.
Hi If you are running XP and you are satisfied your system is running OK try this...Go to Setting-Control Panel-System-System Restore and check box called Turn Off System Restore on All Drives click Apply then OK.
Then go into Start Programmes-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore and create a new restore point

Re: Cleaning up disc drive.
I am unable to use system restore on my computer, which is running Windows XP. I have tried all the suggestions made by Larryx, but to no avail. Anybody got any other suggestions? What should I write in the box which asks for a restore point description? Thanks.

have a look on ebuyer.com for an external hard drive - saw a 500Gb this morning for £67.99 including VAT
Why an external drive? - its easier to install if you are not confident about installing an internal device (just plug in the usb) and its portable to the next computer. Use it to save all your data such as music, videos, photos etc. with that much storage you are unlikely to run out of space in a hurry

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. What I was hopeing was that someone has a dos based routine that scanned thru the drive looking for unused temporary files that aren't required and aren't removed by shareware clearing programs.
By the way Thursan, a 500GB drive for £70. I remember 25 years ago and the IT squad installed the first micro computer in the company I worked for, it had a 58mb hard drive and we thought that was simply amazing! I guess the cost was probably 10's of thousands.

Hi Harem
You can write anything you like in the Restore Point Desciption. I normally write something like "this seems OK".
