Hacking in to ADSL
Hi, I have paid to have a telephone line installed into my apartment so that I can have an ADSL connection. A nice lady has moved into the apartment below me and I have heard that her landlord has suggested she connects to the internet using my wireless ADSL connection. Can anyone tell me how I can set my ADSL connection up so that it can't be connected to by anyone else? He apparently also suggested that if she decides to subscribe to Digiturk that she will only need the box and card because she will be able to "share" my satellite dish.

Re: Hacking in to ADSL
Well if it is the same as the UK you can set it up securely via the wireless router. You(or someone) needs to get access via the admin account and set it up. Mine I have set so only specific mac addresses can connect to it.

Re: Hacking in to ADSL
What a helpful landlord!
ADSL can only be shared if you are using a wireless modem. She would then need a compatible wireless receiver on her computer. If you use such a thing you can block anyone else using it by activating the code protection, and unless you give her the code she can not access it.
The Digiturk is less of a problem to you. She would have to pay for a Twin Llnb - the receiver part of the dish - which would share the dish but nothing else. She would have a separate wire going to her Digiturk box, which would require a separate subscription. This is useful if you don't want a lot of dishes on the side of a house.
The other way, which I don't expect you will want, is the system used for large blocks of flats. It uses one dish and a distribution system, but still requires each person to have a separate subscription.

Re: Hacking in to ADSL
Hi Helen,
This is becomming more and more of a problem - I do wish you luck with it ! I gather that you can set security on the router and that it isnt that difficult to do. I'm told that the default settings on routers tend to be "no security" so that all programs will function.
I can suggest one low tech option - power off the router when not in use. Its so easy to forget its on ! I personally know one individual who jumps on free hotspots for his internet use whilst in Turkey. This is a growing problem. Strange how people see this as "free" isnt it ?
We have a wired router to defeat this problem entirely. They are cheap . Could that be an option for you ?
Just had a thought - are you on the top floor ? If so do you own the roof ? many blocks have a clause in the management plan about dishes. You might be able to split the cost of your dish with your new neighbour if they want to connect. Keeps the number of dishes down and splits any repair bills. As others have said, then individual subscriptions are needed.
If you own the roof you are going to have a lot of say on what goes up there !

Re: Hacking in to ADSL
Helen, it occurs to me that your instruction manual may be in Turkish. If you give the make & model number it may be possible to find an English version to help you set your security.

Yes, everything in Turkish. I introduced the tenant to the landlord - just to be helpful to both parties - and for no financial gain.
