PC connection

How do you all manage to get internet connection in Turkey, we havent got a connection at our villa and cant find any Public wireless connections in or around Avsallar (no Mcdonalds, Starbucks etc), there are a couple of internet cafes would they have wireless connection and is it the done thing to go and ask if we can use our laptop in there, never been in a internet cafe how does it work, do you pay per hour or minute and what is a reasonable rate.

If we were to get a connection at the villa how much approx would it cost for installation and per month, we are trying to work out if it would be worth it, as we are only there for about 6 week a year.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: PC connection

Jane you need to have a telephone installed before you can get internet connection. I paid 140 YTL for connection to the nearest connection box and then bought a cheap cordless phone. My monthly phone bill is approx 60 YTL. You can then get a free modem from Turk Telecom. My basic internet package is approx 32 YTL per month.

There is a new internet cafe in Avsallar. This is on the road behind the new My Home Resort Hotel. I'll pop in and ask if you can use your own laptop and also what the hourly rates are for using their PC's. (that is if I can anyone to speak English in there!!). There are also a couple of Internet cafes in Avsallar centre as well.

Re: PC connection

Jane, Unless you have a Residence Permit you cannot get a phone connection. If you go down that path personally I dont think it's worth it. An Internet Cafe would I suspect let you use your own Laptop as long as you paid the rate they would normall charge which here is about 1.5 lira per hour.

Thanks Val, Dont go out of your way but if your passing that would be great, Im sure your Turkish is better than mine.

I think you are all right I dont think it would be worth getting connected with the small amount of time we are there even if we could.

Mobile PC Internet access

Apparently you can get mobile internet access from Turkcell for 39 ytl per month. (or even 9YTL per month for smaller plan, but I think thats only sufficient for just e-mailing). You can buy a PCMCiA (or something like that) to plug into your laptop & they give you a separate simcard for that. Cost of the "smartcard" is about $250. OR, if your mobile phone is compatible you can use it (with bluetooth or cable connection) as a modem. You have to have a monthly paid bill though, but they say all u need to show them is your passport & a bank statement showing 2000 ytl.

I've not got my head around the speed or data transfer amounts yet but I think its fast & sufficient for "normal" use. I plan to go to Bodrum in next few days to Turkcell main office & try to suss it out so will keep you posted. But in the meantime if anyone knows about this & understands it, please let me know.

Hi Val

I have the same as you but I didnt pay for the connection to the box and I pay 29ytl per month. (Strange).

Jane. I dont think it would be worth it for only 6 weeks unless as has been said you get it through your moble phone and I dont know if you have to have a yearly contract for that or whether you can just do it on a weekly basis. A turkish friend said you can also pay in contours if you do it that way ie 450 per month but I didnt look into that. Good luck, its awful to be without it!!
