Registering English Mobile Phone

As my Turkish mobile phone is falling to bits, I have bought a new phone purchased in the UK. I will need to register it and I have a good idea as to how from reading previous threads on this subject. However, as I have had the same Turkcell number for last 10 years, I want to be able to carry on with this sim card. This number is registered in a Turkish name though.

As I understand it when you register an English phone they give you a new sim card.

My question is can I still put my old sim card in the new phone once registered. Will it work with old number (Turkish obtained) or will there be a problem.

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

I don't know the answer to your problem but if it cannot be done you could possibly redirect all calls from anyone dialling your old number to your new number providing the old number stays active. Just an idea, i'm not clued up on mobiles but I do this often in the uk with my two phones.

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

Once you have it registered to whatever network you use in Turkey and assuming the phone is unlocked you should have no problem using your old sim card.

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

I popped back to the UK for a week and whilst there, bought Ian and I a new mobile each (Samsung E250 slide phone - camera, radio, voice recorder, music player, video) for 22.40 each. We trotted off to the Turcell Extra shop in Didim and was told:

1. You can register one mobile phone every two years.
2. You must register the phone within one month of getting the entry to Turkey stamp in your passport.
3. I provided my passport, residence permit (don't think you have to have this though) and SIM card. They took numerous photocopies.
4. They did not need the purchase receipt, but read the IMEI number from the back of the phone.
5. I paid them the princely sum of 5ytl

Ian's new phone could not be registered as he had not been out of the country.

I was told my phone would be registered in 2-10 days. I have been using it though since day 1 with no problem.

I have just put Ian's SIM into my phone and it works fine.

Wow Val that was simple! If I had read this before I bought a phone last week, I would have waited until my U.K trip in a couple of weeks time. I would have got a far better phone for the same price...oh well..

Did the phone not have to be unlocked? I also thought you had to declare the phone and pay a tax?

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

Well that's great and answered my question. I can't see any prob afterall the phone itself is the hardware that needs registering which is important and it doesn't matter what sim card you put in it.

The way I read it was that when you register an English phone they sell you a new sim card (which I don't want). I just want to register the phone and use my own sim card. As I said before, my sim card is in the name of a Turkish friend. My old phone was bought in Turkey.

I haven't got a receipt for the phone either because it is second-hand (my daughter's old phone)

I will visit the Turkcell Shop on Monday and see if I have your luck Val.

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

I went with a friend a month or so ago and she was told . If you have the original contract from when you purchased the sim card there is noproblem. But im assuming that as you have had it for 10 yrs it may well have been misplaced by now. They wanted to charge her 40tl to open the uk phone and told her as she didnt have the cotract she would need a new number and a charge of 40tl. If you register the phone under a turks name it is free of charge and you can keep the same number, what a load of balloney.

Thanks Waterbaby - we will see on Monday. I fear it is not going to be easy and straightforward.

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

well all i can say is ,when you register the uk mobile, they dont make you have another sim . and so long as your uk mobile is unlocked you can put any turkish sim in it that you like. i have done this with 3 uk mobiles ,word of caution ,you can get it unlocked in uk for as little as 10 but if you try to get it done in turkey they can sometimes charge you a lot more .

Re: Registering English Mobile Phone

I just wanted to report back on this subject to let you know that all the advice I had from you was correct.

I went to the Turkcell shop to register my English phone. The girl tapped away on the computer, took copies of my Passport and Resi book, I signed the printout and she charged me 5 tl and said that I can use my phone in one week's time.

She first asked me if I had a Turkcell phone number and I said yes but it was in the name of a Turkish friend. She said that it was no problem. Easy peasy. I was so made up I purchased a memory card and look forward to snapping away on my new "secondhand" phone next week cos the camera is a good one.
