Turk telecom & tt internet

Over the past three months I have lost my phone and internet connection 3 times, for anything up to a week. There doesn't seem to be any difference on my bills and my internet is always more than the monthly charge (sometimes twice as much). My wireless internet was a secure setting, but when I got it back last week it had changed to an insecure setting. With the help of the advice centre at TT net I changed the modem name and password. Suddenly three days later my modem has changed itself to the following name WPA_KULLANMA_WEP_KULLAN and is now an open wireless network which I cannot access!!!!! Can any technical person advise me if my internet is being accessed by other people and also how on earth I can get a secure network. I am seriously considering cancelling TT Net as my account is always way over the agreed tariff and I don't download anything.

Do you think there is a problem with my modem?

If I change my internet provider, is there a good service other than TT Net?

Any help from you technical guys would be appreciated.

Val

Hi Val,

Certainly sounds like someone has "piggybacked" on your wireless connection and probably taken you over your cap limit with TTNET, hence the high bills (you get billed for every 1Mb over the basic package 4Gb monthly limit on the 29TL package).

Best thing is to reset your Wireless modem (theres a small hole at the back you usally have to poke a pin or pen in and hold for a few seconds) then go through the setup of it again from scratch and make sure at least WEP is enabled, WPA is better and more secure though.

Hi Val
I was very interested in your post as we have had a similar problem. Our wireless is disabled and we dont download, like yourself but we were always over the 4Gb limit.
Complained many times to many people and the standard answer is that we are downloading too much. They will not listen!
As the bills were coming in at 60+.70+ and once even 80+we just decided to go for the unlimited package.
Now we are unlimited my son is downloading like crazy and having checked our total download to date it is no more than it was when we were not downloading anything
Just cant work it out!!!!

Just as a quick aside, you can check your quota at any time online with TTNET here (TTNET // ADSL Kota Sorgulama), may help to stop those huge bills before they arrive!

Re: Turk telecom & tt internet

That is weird Abla if your wireless is disabled as well, Ive got an article about how to setup an easy to use bandwidth monitor (HERE) so you can check whats generating the traffic in realtime. If your wireless was enabled you could scan the network to see which other computers were connected and block them but in your case it must be either your PC or TTnet thats got something wrong!

Thanks Mack
I will have a watch at what is going on with the bandwidth monitor.

When wireless was enabled I used to monitor that and no signs of any other users.
The first year I was on adsl I had no problems. My PC is clean.I am sure it is a ttnet prob but as I have said before....they will not listen.
Hope I will now be able to give them proof after using your suggestion.
Thank you again.

Re: Turk telecom & tt internet

This is exactly what has happened to us. Our bill is usually 29ytl but for the past 2 months has been 60ytl. We were told that it was because we had downloaded too much but our pc was broken for 3 weeks during the second illing period so the internet wasnt used. We have a secure wireless network and have reset the password. My husband went to TTnet to pay the bill and discuss the matter but they wouldn't accept that there was a problem so we had no choice but to pay...Really they don't want to listen!

Hello, First of all do not use WEP encryption this can be accessed easily, there are web sites that tell you how, just type in "WEP encryption,Backtrack" and follow the instructions to see how easy . Secondly use WPA2 and do not use words or names as anyone trying to decypher WPA will be using a programe that uses dictionary technoligy to find the encryption. Always use mixed letters, numbers and other symbols i.e "Ł$%^&*()+ and mix them wth upper and lower case. You almost certainly will have to access your router. If you type into your browser 192.168.1.252 this should get you in. Change your encryption code regulary. Occasionally check the lights on your router when you are not using it to see if they are flashing, this usually indicates someone is using it. Keep nothing important in your temporary files as once someone has your key they can get into your computer files. Buy the latest best security software you can afford. Update your security software at least once a week. Hope this helps. Michael

Use an ethernet cable instead of wireless if your router accepts them.

or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 (depends on your modem setup) as to which one.
