Mobile phone service providers

I know enough enough from my last very expensive cell phone experience in Turkey that next time I will get a Turkish SIM card for my phone.

Does anyone have info on what - if any - provider is the better of the bunch (plans, fees, tariffs, coverage etc.) for the occasional visitor and lite user?

I have a Telsim pay as you go mobile sim card, I purchase 250 units for 23ytl and every text i send to the uk or anywhere is 3units, I can phone the uk for say 20mins and it has only taken 54 units, also every time I top up the card i get 10-20 units free, last month they gave me 100 units free. however, I found when I visited the UK last year there was no coverage, so had to buy a uk sim.
Turkcel, this cost approx the same and i am not sure (hope someone will tell) if it has uk coverage, and if so can you use a credit card for top up. if you can get UK coverage on this Turkcel, could you not get some one to buy a 100 unit card every 3 months send the scatch code and then top up from the UK?

I have just unlocked my friends phone from the uk and it has accepted my Telsim sim card, as I needed a new phone,

Thanks for the info. The costs you give seem reasonable. I'd probably buy a Telsim SIM card and just switch it with the UK SIM as and when I needed it.

I would check to see if you have to make calls or send a text to keep the phone live, some (so I have heard ) need to be used every 3months or so.

Turkcell doesnt work very well at all in Akbuk Mike, go for Telsim as suggested.

Thats correct about the account terminating if not charged for 3 months.

Do you guys mean that the account has to be topped up at least every 3 months or used for calls in that period to remain active?

Afraid so, you could leave the phone with someone and enough money to top up on 100 units every 3 months and to send you a text once in this time. Some agents do this service for you, or you could ask one of your neighbours, or a friend that lives there to do this for you.

There was talk of one of the bigger EU contries taking over Telsim, cant remember which one but if they do succeed then this would give greater coverage and probably include the UK, but again this is for the future,

Mike, just hold on a few days as Mushtaq will be making some news here that will benefit everyone.

Re: Mobile phone service providers

avea is the best for now where ever you call in turkey (mobile or normal phone) cost you 3 units per minute, and text is only 2 units.
