Broadband routers in Turkey

Hi, we are moving out to Ovacik at the end of May and are trying to sort out a few last minute things.
We intend having a phone line installed for calls/broadband and have already established that our wireless router will not work as it is specific to BT.
Is it better to buy a new router and bring it with us (we have the necessary adaptor) or can you get a wireless router in Turkey for a reasonable price - and would it have an RJ11 connector?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Broadband routers in Turkey

My advice to you for what it is worth, is visit ebay and buy a couple of bog standard Belkin wireless routers no more than £8 each. All the connections are universal so they will work here. Why do I suggest buying a couple?, well after you have lived here for a while and experience some of the horrendous electric storms we have you will discover how vulnerable these little bits of kit are. You will no doubt as a new TTNet customer be given a free modem router and they will want to set it up for you, let them do it, it costs nothing. If and when it goes wonky just install your Belkin. You will of course have to programme it with all your username, password and other guff but believe me you will struggle to do that with a Turkish modem as they donít normally come with UK user friendly instructions. Best of luck, enjoy Turkey and the snail paced internet we have here.

I concur with catweazle, just to add some weight to it. Locals tend to call on me whenever they have modem/router problems and the only difference I've noticed between my own routers bought in UK and those bought here is that the default language for setting them up is Turkish, but usually you can set it to English. The actual settings will depend on your ISP, but they are published on the ISP's web site (if you can find them!).. shout later when you come!

And yes, they have the same physical connectors as UK, but you'll need to replace the phone line cable as the UK phone sockets are different from the Turkish ones.

Do we need to protect items such as TV's from the storms? We had TV's and fax machine wrecked in the UK from a storm several years ago.

It is advisable. While I have lived here a number of years and have never had any problem, a friend who lives a few miles away has had various domestic power supplies fried. Locals know how to repair them There are lots of power supply anti surge devices in the shops for not a lot of money.

Lez, I’ve got Tncmatic surge protectors and UPS devices connected to my router but they still go. As I said to the OP get some cheap wireless routers on eBay and fetch them over. I always ask my visitors to bring one, for £8 It’s the easiest option. I have had 7 killed here in five years.

Blimey The friend that I mentioned had a dodgy mains supply unbeknown to him; in bad weather conditions he had lots of stuff blow; not only routers - it turned out after several years that there were some wiring problems at / near his house and sometimes he was getting over 300V to the house. That's fixed now and he's had no further problems.
