Re: Cheap Calls to and From Turkey

For those members looking for free/cheap calls using the internet, have you considered buying a Tesco internet phone? You can buy a phone from Tesco or from their website http://www.tescointernetphone.com/?op=ignore, where you can also find out all about the phones too.
From any Tesco phone to any other Tesco phone anywhere in the world it is free. To call back to landlines in the UK it is 2p per minute and 10p per minute to mobiles, and also 2p per minute to landlines and mobiles in many countries worldwide. You have to register the phone to an address in the UK and choose a UK number. This allows you to have a UK number wherever you are in the world. This is good as now whenever I ring, for example my bank in the UK which is a freephone number, I get to make free phone calls to them too!
An advantage for anyone calling you from the UK, who doesnt have a Tesco phone, who lives within the 'local' area to your number means they can ring you at 'local' rates.
The line quality is excellent, they have a voicemail service as well.
The phone I have cost £15, it is about the same size as a mobile phone and just plugs in via an USB port. With the £15 you also get a £5 voucher to start your account off with, and then you can top up online whenever you need to.
I have recommended these phones to a few neighbours here now that I have tried it out. And they are also very pleased with how much they are saving and the quality of the lines.

If anyone has a wifi enabled PDA, take a look at Skype

I'm hoping to call home for peanuts, compared to mobile roaming rates next time away.

Dont know if anyone is interested but seeing Rachels note on calling her mum in Cyprus, I am with Talk talk, I pay 9.99 per month get all daytime and evening call free to anywhere even europe countries. I can stay on the phone for 60mins I find this great as I can ring my sister in Cyprus as often as I like. This 9.99 also includes my broadband calls - so I think it is good value for money

Hi Missmo, I have the same plan as you with Talk Talk. Remember you must use the 18418 to take advantage of the reduced rates.

In addition, there are several different packages, the £9.99 package that you are on does include free calls to EEC countries only (incl. Souther Cyprus), but there is a cost to call Turkey. I believe the rates are 8p to Turkish landlines and 15p to Turkish mobiles.

We are with Talktalk for phone(inc line rental), international and 8 meg broadband. My bill that arrived today was £25 for the month including all the above and all calls including my wife phoning Ireland. They now also include 36 European(and other) countries including USA, New Zealand free up to 60 mins so just redial to carry on nattering.

Hi Liz, Many thanks for this tip. Most of the suggestions here are from the UK to wherever. I need cheap calls from Turkey to my mother in the UK. She's over 80 so I call every day (sometimes more than once). When our house is finally finished we will have also have internet. Any other tips will be gratefully received.
