It appears that your handset is set to 'pulse' dialing. There will probably be a switch or setting to swap to 'Tone' dialling. If a switch it may be hidden under a label and market TB or TE or option to switch between t & p.You require T, TE or TB not P (pulse). The line should be capable of accepting tone or pulse signals for dialling but tone is much better and quicker. I presume it is a reasonably modern phone as all of them have the ability to switch to tone dialling.

Hi David, thanks for the help, but that is not the problem, the phone is set to tone dialling, its the line that appears to be the prob. Like I said it appears that it was installed the same way you would have installed an old extension. Not surprising when you consider that it is literally only a piece o blue and white bell wire sent up to our window and inside! didn't even come with a proper terminal, we had to buy a little box! after the man had been Iwas in shock, i kept asking Tuncay when they were coming back to finish! when were they going to install the terminal box, with a nice plastic cover! he told me I was daft!
Its def not the phone as we can't even connect the laptop to the LAN connection (would be handy for when the leccie goes, but no joy!)

Hmmm, this is confusing. I have worked in telecomms all my working life and this is strange. The clue must be that you do not have a 'direct line' and you are just an extension on a main system. The tones are given out from your handset and if the handset is set to tone than the 'system' you are connecting through is converting to pulse. Try establishing a call to someone and during the call press any key, this should produce a tone if your phone is set to tone dialling. Or maybe the system you are connecting through is converting all your key presses to pulse which is unusual. I would still say that if during an established call on pressing any button, you do not hear a tone then it is down to a setting on your handset as your line provider has told you. If it is important to you and want to call me in the uk then PM me and I will give you my number and I can do some basic tests as I think we are boring other forum members!
