Broadband Via Satellite

Anyone know if Satellite broadband would work to give full WiFi coverage on our complex, perhaps one or more installed and positioned to give full WiFi coverage, we have 660 properties spread over a 1/2 mile radius.

Our cabling is not adequate and would need upgrading at a cost of 60,000 Lira.

Any advice welcomed.

this covers up to 6 km but how many users you may have may mean you need a few broadband accounts.

There are quite a few high gain wifi setups you can buy including repeaters.

Re: Broadband Via Satellite

Satellite would require a central modem, then A distribution network around the site, wired or wireless, they use these where the network provider can't provide the service to your site ie too far from the exchange.

The amplifiers bickern mentions will in the correct conditions give the coverage they claim but you would need one at either end as your laptop is unlikely to have that wi fi range

What are they suggesting over cable upgrade ? Do they mean installing a cat 5 network within the site with wireless access points ?

Re: Broadband Via Satellite

Hi Martin & Norman

Thanks for your replies, most helpful, I believe they were going to use the electric cabling for this technology to send a signal around the complex, the same as BT Vision use for Broadband in the UK. It appears the cabling is not up to standard, so we are looking at alternatives and Satellite BB was my thought

I have seen the Satellite Broadband dishes located around remote parts of Ireland but never spoken to anyone about exploiting the full potential of the product.

Common sense would tell me that if you can get it to a location then the possibility exists to share the connection among a larger audience using add-ons.

Have emailed a company on the internet inquiring about their services, they say it is possible but need to come to the site to do a study.....their language suggests that we pay for that investigation and quote......as far as I am concerned, they should have some idea of costs if they have done this before, in any case, it is just a suggestion on my part to give the complex total WiFi, we just need a ball park figure to work off. If we can afford it we will do it, we do not want to pay OTT as it is a luxury item and not a priority.

So it was my hope to find someone out there who have engaged a similar provider or means.

Re: Broadband Via Satellite

Hi Bueman,

The medium you would use to distribute the wifi from the satellite modem would likely be the same as you would use with any other type of modem, my guess is wi fi repeaters would be your best option.

I am guessing you can get a broadband line to some part of your site.

Re: Broadband Via Satellite

Hi Martin

Thanks for the info, and yes we have broadband delivered to the Clubhouse/Bar/Social area.

It was suggested each Home Owner could arrange to have individual connections in their properties by arrangement with Telecom provider and paying monthly tariff. That could be quite expensive if you only use your property once or twice a year. Would be content to pay towards total coverage of the complex and spread the cost among all owners if it worked out cheaper.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for or do without. Looking for the cheapest option in any case.

Re: Broadband Via Satellite

I was in Scotland recently in an area without mobile coverage and we had satellite broadband to the house. Even with boosters on each floor, the service was very, very basic and a lot of sites would time out before I could load them. I couldn't access my icloud account at all. On this basis, I can't recommend satellite internet connection.
