Registering phone IMEI in Turkey after being blocked on tourist visa

So I just arrived in Istanbul, Turkey about a week ago and will be staying here for the next 8 months. I have a friend who speaks fluent Turkish and English, so he helped me go get a phone plan for my iPhone. I always thought you had to have a permanent residency visa to register your phone here, so I thought I'd just try and get a plan for my phone now, and wait tell it gets blocked. Then once I get my residency visa (december 30th) ill register the phone. But I cant do that because I have to register the phone within 30 days of entering the country. So I got the plan though 2 days ago, and just got a text saying my phone will be shut off in 5 days. My questions for any of you guys are:

1. Can I register the phone on just a tourist 90 day visa? Not a permanent visa.
2. Now that my phone has been put on the block list, can I still go try to register it at a bank, tax office or post office?
3. Do I have to first unblock my phone(how?) then register it?

Thank you guys so much!
P.S. I would just go to a bank today and try to get this sorted out, but its the sacrifice holiday so I dont think anything will be open tell friday (2 days from now).

Re: Registering phone IMEI in Turkey after being blocked on tourist visa

Sorry but something does not quite sound right, because phones do not get blocked that quick and certainly not within about 10 days.

1. Yes you can, all of which has to be done within 30 days of entry into Turkey, you will need photo copies of your passport complete with the entry visa stamp showing the date of entry, then once you have paid the tax at the tax office which is about 120TL, you then go to the phone shop of your choice with the tac receipt and pay for a connection charge and also purchase a SIM package which might be about 40TL which will include a small amount of SIM credit.

2. You need to check with your phone shop about that one, but I don't see why they can't unlock it once you have paid the tax.

3. No you would need to register it first, which sounds a bit of a catch 22 situation, so again, check at your phone shop before paying the tax on it.

Yeah I was hoping it'd last atleast 2 weeks tell I could get all this figured out, but it was only 2 days, then I got the text saying it'll be shut off in 5 days. So I'll have it working for 7 days total. Which I guess is better than nothing, as long as I can get it working in the end.

But thanks for the info! But as for your first answer, sense I all ready have a sim and a plan, do you think Turkcell will charge me again to set up a new line? I should still have 3 more weeks of 3g internet, and 30 lyra still left on it.

I did think that if you put a Turkish sim in a unregistered UK mobile then it WOULD be shut down within days . ?

Yes it sounds as if mmurdock95 has taken out the UK SIM and replaced it with a Turkish SIM which probably explains his problem.

I have read on here where people say a UK SIM can last anything upto ... well several weeks, I know my own in the past has lasted over 3 weeks.

Re: Registering phone IMEI in Turkey after being blocked on tourist visa

Right, my american ATT sim works just fine, for as long as I want, but I will be here for 8 months so I need to get a Turk sim because it's cost efficient. So I did get one, and 7 days later it was shut off, which I knew would probably happen just not that soon, maybe 2 weeks atleast.

Re: Registering phone IMEI in Turkey after being blocked on tourist visa

So you dont need a residency visa, just a tax I.D. that you can get from a tax office free. But the police take a day to verify your stamp into the country. Then, sense I all ready had a line with 30tl still on it, only 7tl transferred to the new line. Then, the 40tl I paid for 4gb of 3g for my first month(which I only used for 1 week) I had to pay again for this new line I had to open up. Then on top of the 115tl I paid for the tax on the phone, turkcell charged me 70tl for them to register the phone. So it really cost 185tl to register a phone here. And I had to pay 63tl extra because I opened a line before I did this whole process.

Re: Registering phone IMEI in Turkey after being blocked on tourist visa

Obviously sorry to hear it cost you even more money and I don't really know if it could have been avoided by using/activating the SIM you had already purchased, although I suspect you could have, but how far are you prepared to go to now try and get the SIM refund?

But as you are beginning to understand, 'nothing in Turkey is straightforward' especially if you don't do things exactly the way the Turkish government say to do things. (and even then things don't always go according to plan)

I learnt this fact about 6 years ago when I registered at least 2 UK mobiles [cost then was 5 tl each phone ] after a while they still got blocked ,so I bought a Turkish mobile after that. Obviously it only cost me 10 tl to learn my mistake LOL.
