Question Internet via satellite

Anyone got this in Turkey?

If so, would appreciate any info on suppliers, dish size, costs, etc.

Thanks

Re: Internet via satellite

This is one supplier of Tooway, which is a European based service. If you go to the Tooway home page it will give you all the suppliers. A basic system is around 900TL plus mileage, if a long way away, plus rental. Some of the other suppliers seem to offer better packages.

You should ensure that latency (delay) is not going to be a problem. Although fast it can take a few seconds to get going as the signal has to travel. Once it starts to load it is fast. There are a lot of forums dealing with this: search "tooway problems" for more info. Other than that it seems to be OK. I was going to go down this route, but last week Fibrenet cables were laid into my road, so I will go for that.

Re: Internet via satellite

Just had a friend ask me about sat internet as someone stole his phone line, or should I say "the phone line" as about 200 are affected in Toparlar.

Thanks Ian.

Re: Internet via satellite

I had Tooway sat connection in the UK, good speed and 8gb bandwidth a month as our BT was only 0,4 mbs. After the first year I gave it up as I found the latency was more than they advertised and I was waiting 4 or 5 seconds for a connection. Also I was struggling to make the 8gb bandwidth last a month. I ran the BT one at the same time and although the download speed was slower the connection was instant.

Also I was allowed 10gb a month with BT and the sort of browsing I did only used about 1 gb a week but for some reason with the same sort of browsing the Satellite broadband used double.

Also I was paying £25 a month for the Tooway and only £5 a month for BT. As I spend 6 months of the year in Turkey it made the Tooway package expensive.

So no contest between BT and Tooway

Re: Internet via satellite

After 2 weeks with Tooway:
Good Part.
Always fast connection. Slowest 18Mbps and up to 21Mbps - averaging around 20mbps. Once it has connected to a page it downloads it very quickly. System works well. Anything downloaded at night is not part of allocated bandwidth. Works well with VPN and Tor.

Less Good Part
Easy to use up bandwidth (see below). Very slight delay(latency) <700mseconds in connection (hardly notice it). Interesting that the most noticeable hesitancy is when the web page is in Turkey ( the Sat station is in Northern Italy) and anything coming back into TR has a slight pause.

In the first few day I got carried away watching You Tube and leaving the TV running - checked my bandwidth on the on-line scale and found I had used half my monthly allowance in four days. Went on to regime of using TTnet ADSL in the day and Tooway when needed; I have now caught up with myself, so to speak.

System expertly installed by Gary (EchoStar in Fethiye) who gives rule of thumb that 1Gb gives around 2 hours of TV. I am on a 25Gb package.

So at the moment I am using both systems until I am clear what is what. Only justifiable on the basis that it is my main form of entertainment/information.
