Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

I have a UK passport and live in England and my partner has a Turkish passport and lives in Turkey.

Just over 12 months ago, we brought a UK phone into Turkey. We registered the phone through the correct channels using my partners documents and within 30 days of him returning to Turkey - so he could use his Turkcell sim and the phone would not get blocked.

In the last couple of months, the phone became water damaged and is beyond repair. I am travelling to Turkey next month and I'm wondering if I can register another UK phone using my passport and leave it in Turkey for him to use? We can't register another one in his name as the last one was not more than two years ago and he's not been out of the country so has no passport stamp.

I am staying for 90 continuous days, which would effectively be outside of the (now) 60 days before a UK phone gets blocked. Is it possible for me to register the phone on my passport and leave it in the country?

Also, my partner has heard that UK registered phones are 'listened' to, due to tightened security. Is there any truth in that?

Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

I was under the impression a phone could only be registered by someone holding a residents permit (or, obviously, a kimlik).......but I am not 100% sure on that.

As Martin quite rightly says there is no need for a RP. Phones have always been able to be registered on tourist visas provided its within 30 days of the last entry stamp in the passport.

Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

The issue we had was that the phone and the sim had to be registered to the same person. Not sure whether this would be a problem for you and, anyway, it might have just been a local thing.

Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

Thanks for the replies. Just so it's clear (in my head), I would just take the phone, my passport and tourist visa to the government office, pay 130 TL, and then go to Turkcell/Vodaphone? Once the phone is registered, it will never get blocked? - i.e. once my tourist visa expires and and I return back to the UK (but leave the phone in Turkey for my partner to use)?

Also, my partner has a Vodafone sim. Will that sim be ok to use in the new registered phone, or will he/I need to get a new sim and number, and register it in my name (so it correlates to the IMEI registration)?

Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

We managed to get our existing sim (in my husband's name) re-registered in my name. Because I rather stupidly registered the new phone in my own name. It was a bit of a business and involved us buying a new sim but we did keep the same number (and the old sim).
It is, I think, a lot easier just to bite the bullet and buy a phone in Turkey. I think we ended up saving about 4 TL by registering a phone we bought in the UK.

Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

I did the same thing, registered a phone then not long after decided to swim with it in my pocket. Obviously ruined. Got a replacement UK phone and was able to register that one as a replacement using the same registration. Went to Turkcell and explained, they wrote to the "officials"in ankara who agreed the change. No need to start again.

Unhappy Re: Registering a UK phone to use with a Turkish sim

You may register a foreign-purchased phone only once in two calendar years. This is a bit confusing.

The Missus wanted to buy a new phone from a US site so she called BTK and asked if she purchased a new foreign phone on December 2013, could she renew after January 2015 and they said she could.

The price of registering a foreign-purchased phone will rise soon to 600 TL.

Association expects rise in number of mobile phones purchased abroad after tax raise - August/03/2015

An expected increase of the customs tax on mobile phones in Turkey will cause a rise of mobile phones brought from abroad, according to sector representatives.

“With an additional tax on mobile phones, we expect around a 33 percent increase in the number of mobile phones that will be brought by passengers from abroad. We have therefore demanded that the tax charged for each mobile phone to register an international mobile station equipment identity (IMEI) to increase from 131.5 Turkish Liras to 600 liras,” said head of the Association for Mobile Communication Devices and Information Technologies Businessmen (MOBİSAD), Sinan Ekşi.

He noted that some 750,000 mobile phones were brought into the country last year and expected this figure to rise to 1 million this year. The number of mobile phone that entered Turkey illegally was around 800,000 last year; this is expected to increase to 1.1 million, according to the association.

Around 14.1 million mobile phones are expected to be sold this year.

Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said the country will put additional import taxes on electronic goods in the upcoming days at a press meeting on July 2.
