285TL for Foreign phone registration

My Daughter bought a phone whilst on holiday in Britain over the summer and wants to register it, I've never gone through this process before but read the yellali guide and previous forum posts.

I went to the main Turkcell office on the main road through Didim to ask about the process and was told the following;

1. Go to Police get my daughters entry stamp authorized
2. Foreigners office to get Residency authorized
3. Go to Tax office to pay 135tl for foreign phone tax
4. come back to Turkcell office and pay 50TL for new sim and also 100TL for processing fee

Does anyone else on here have any recent (last few months) experience on registering a phone, also I could go to any of the other providers i.e. Avea or Vodafone to register as she already has here own sim in her current Turkish phone.

Thanks in Advance

Marc

I found it easier and as cheap just to buy a Turkish mob without all the Hassle.I think once it's registered you can put any Turk sim in .

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

It must be registered within 60 days of the last entry stamp into Turkey (used to be 30 days).
Not sure why they want to charge for a new sim as if she is already with Turkcell she can put her existing sim in.
Everything else is accurate but the processing fee seems steep. I took friends to do it a couple of months back and the fee was 40TL but as we all know things change.
Evo is right about being able to change sims - provided it is registered againt a residency permit. Previously when anyone registered against a tourist visa they were tied to the one Turkish sim - in effect locked to one Turkish mobile number - but could still be used with a UK sim when returning for hols etc.

Obviously your daughter needs to register it, but as already has been said many smartphones are now as cheap to buy here (infact some cheaper) due to the 4.7TL exchange rate and the costs of registration not being required.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping someone who had just gone through the process in Didim could advise as I thought the Process fee was excessive.

I appreciate the advice on buying the phone, but its already done and here and also the model she wanted is not going to be available in Turkey until next year.

She will bite the bullet and just do it, but wanted to double check that she wasn't going to be fleeced on the processing fee and also the compulsory new sim (which is not needed).

Thanks

Marc

Actually I've only just thought about it, and at 285TL (61) seems cheaper than a few months ago where people were saying almost 90.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

The other problem is that sometimes even after registration the phone goes down and it is a real pain and can take weeks to get it back on line and of course no guarantee with a UK phone once it is out of Europe. Bim doing one for 499 tl looks very good and seems to have all the bits you need.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

For information. Samsung phones can have their imei changed to one created in Turkey therefore bypassing the need to register. And as long as its unlocked can use any sim anywhere...,,.forever. I've just had it done, cost 40 tl to unlock and 60 for new imei or vica versa. I'm guessing that most phone shops can do it, but prob best avoiding official Turkcell shops.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

Many people have gone down this route - but worth remembering that you say cheerio to your Samsung warranty the minute you illegally change the phone's imei number. Obviously if the phone is out of warranty or you are happy with the potential risks involved then no problem whatsoever.
A good friend of mine who owns a Turkish mobile shop tells me that just as the Turkish Government can track a non-Turkish imei number in seconds they are also very close (if not there already) to having the technology to spot when a Samsung smartphone is using an imei number often belonging to a scrapped ancient Turkish phone.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

It was an out of warranty phone granted and good advice from villabaris as far as invalidating your warranty. But I'm not sure that they use scrapped imei numbers, if that was the case why would this method be unique to Samsung phones. I was informed that they have to go thru Samsung to do it.

Re: 285TL for Foreign phone registration

Am afraid you were informed wrong Ed and were obviously told something to make you feel it was more legit! Imei numbers are unique to an individual phone and there are no "spare" ones floating about just waiting to be allocated to foreign phones to deprive the Turkish government of revenue! Whilst some countries do have sophisticated software programmes for illegally changing IMEI numbers to "ghost" ones, the Turks tend to be more basic and use scrapped ones.
The process used is simple. The dealer (usually a back street type as opposed to an authorised dealership) literally takes the imei number from a phone that has been scrapped and reattaches it to the foreign phone. As a result, the IMEI number attached to your chipped phone will be attributed to an old Samsung model usually from pre-smartphone days. It is not unique to Samsung phones - although they are the bulk of those chipped - it can also be done with LG phones too.
I am far from technical but the reason these two brands are easy to do is that the IMEI info is stored externally to the main phone functions as opposed to Apple which is more complicated and internal - but allegedly still possible to do at a much higher price.

However, a quick google search will explain how its done in many countries, is totally illegal, and a clampdown worldwide has resulted in jail sentences for dealers doing it.
Please dont treat this post as scaremongering, just giving a few facts so people can make an informed decision - especially if they are being told its a Samsung approved process which it blatantly is not.
