Re: digital camera recomendations
Every camera we have had has been Sony, and we upgrade all the time. Marvelous.
I picked up mine form Argos when I flew home.

Re: digital camera recomendations
Olympus are good and bargin prices can be found. Go for the max optical zoom rather than the digital zoom.
Whatever make 5-6 million pixels seems to be the new norm but 4 is still good.

Re: digital camera recomendations
I always buy Canon and have been very happy with them, I like the rechargeable battery, build and picture quality.
The last one I bought was IXUS 700, saw it today in Dixons for £269, very nice little camera.

Re: digital camera recomendations
Still can't decide , what is more important optical zoom
or lots of megapixels
I ought to explain I have 4'6" wide digital printer which
prints onto vinyl, photo paper, canvas, fabric, banner material
so I need the ability to blow up quite big if I want to!

Re: digital camera recomendations
Carol
I've got a Casio QV-R61. It's really easy to use (it needs to be!) and has got loads of features on it - many I'm still discovering!
It has the option of taking different size photos - from 640 x 480 to 2816 x 2112. Although all fairly easy to re-size on the PC.
It's 6.0 mega pixels - and takes really clear, good photos - although I'm not sure this is essential since I've seen other photos with less pixels that are still reasonable. It's got optical and digital zoom and a decent sized screen at the back to view the photos.
I bought mine when Dixons were doing a deal - I think it was about £250, including a card thing (for extra memory) and storage case and the usual CDs for the PC.
I was basically looking for a camera that was easy to use but that took decent pictures - I'm really pleased with it.
I suspect there is probably an updated model out now - and probably lower in price too!
Hope this helps!

Re: digital camera recomendations
A camera with a good lens is very important, then the number of pixels, 6-7meg should be fine, most of the cameras in that price range have an optical zoom of about 3 x
Digital zoom is not important as you can do that on your PC.
A good range from Canon is the Powershot S series, I have an S50 which I think is now discontinued, these are quite small but not very thin.
You should be able to pickup some good deals on these as the trend is for thinner smaller, but these are very good camera that give good results, also have rechargable battery and you can buy memory cards at good prices too.
Look for Canon S50 or S60 there should be some bargains around.
If you want to see some examples, you can have a look at www.fethiyefotos.co.uk this was my S30 (3 meg) which I lost, or www.capturedthis.com here you will find more recent pictures from the S50 (5 meg) and some from my latest camera the Nikon D70 a little more expensive.

Re: digital camera recomendations
For doing enlargements then you need the max pixels you can get. I seem to remember Sony doing and 8 million pixel SLR digital. Not the cheapest but to confuse even more is that Fuji have a 10.7 optical zoom and 9 million pixels.
Also need to be able to take at least a 1MB memory cary so you can store maximum shots instead of having to carry spare cards.
