Using your mobile in Turkey

Just got my Vodafone statement [V] been using my phone in Turkey, what a rip-off, my wife's statement turned up from Virgin mobile, and the difference in costs is staggering this prompted me to do some quick research on various network charges while roaming in Turkey.

Here is a chart from my findings.

Most of the options are extra cost per month on top of your contract (around £2.50)

Most operators charge you a minimum of 1 minute.

Looks like Virgin pay monthly and O2 with International option are the cheapest options, as my contract with Vodafone has finished, I think it's time to switch.

Mine is about £5 in text messages - but then again I am a Billy-no-mates and don't go gadding about (bed by 10).

For local calls, taxi's etc it is a good idea to get a cheap mobile and stick a local sim card in it.

We've got an old Nokia that took a Turkcell Hazar Card (PAYG) without needing unlocked. I think it may have been on Virgin originally. The Hazar card was about 35 mil and came with a fair bit of credit. If you go with Turkcell then there is an "English" option on the top up phone number menu which makes topping up the credits a breeze.

I feel so deprived as I havent had a mobile phone bill ever??? Yes correct no mobile phone lets face it a holidat is get away from it all including EVERYONE!! Am I being cynical or what anyway Karen's sister has given her a phone so we will take it out there have a Turkish Sim Card fitted as we have been told by all (yes we do have some!) our friends that that is the cheapest most efficient way to do it. I understand you not only pay for the calls to UK but also for those incomings too???? These mobile companies have it made dont they ask yourself these two questions:- ONE "What did people do with their hands and time before mobile phones?" TWO "What do people of colour do with the time that white folk spend sunbathing?" No offence given so please dont think I'm being so.

The best option is to have a UK phone with Virgin, that way you can receive your text messages for free, and the cheapest calls from UK at only 30p a minute, and the few calls back to UK won't cost you a fortune.

And take a spare phone (which is unlocked) with you to buy a Turkish sim card for making local calls, also give this number to people in UK that you rather not hear from, because they will be paying the international call charge to Turkish mobile number.
