Death of a Dream

Did anybody else read this article in today's Daily Mail about what is happening in Spain. I found it quite scary. Muggings, murder, rape, robbings, burglaries after people have been rendered unconscious in their own homes by some form of chloroform gas by intruders, kidnapping, the list goes on, the main targets being the British who have sold up in the UK and moved over to Spain. Now it appears that quite a number wish to sell up and return to the UK as "many Britons no longer feel safe". However the article also mentions that it is not easy for them to sell as there are 750,000 apartments and villas for sale on the Costa Brava alone.

Let's pray that we do not read a similar article about Turkey in year's to come. In the article the Spanish police come up for a lot of criticism and I would be interested to know if anyone has had the misfortunate experience of dealing with the Turkish police after a robbery or an attack and how they dealt with the situation.

At the moment I feel so relieved that I decided upon Turkey as being the country in which to buy my Home in the Sun but am concerned that similar problems will start to occur on a more regular basis in Turkey as more foreigners, as it is obviously not just the British,
take advantage of the relative low cost of housing the country offers

I don't about foreigners look at this from the Fethiye times
Police Catch Tuesday Market Pick Pocket Gang posted 1 June 2005

Easy pickings at the market?

Reports of people having purses and wallets stolen at the busy Tuesday market in Fethiye have been on the increase since the tourist season started this year. However, following a successful police operation this problem should now be reduced. Fethiye Police arrested a group of pick pockets, including 3 children and one English woman, at the Tuesday market on 31 May.

Market shoppers should still be on the alert though. The market is rich pickings for the light fingered thief so make sure you keep your wallet, purse and any other valuables close to you.

That will be the problem when the Brits run out of cash and cannot work - no state benefits there. I think they may find the prison system a bit harder out there.

I was actually impressed by the regular presence of the police patrols in our area. I did query if there had been problems but I was informed that it was just general patrolling and they also get people to turn their music down after midnight etc.

I think an increase in crime will always be a threat and a lot of it in spain is organised crime. My only hope is that at the moment Turkey is trying very hard to encourage tourists and property sales are big money for them. Spain has been doing this for years already and hopefully we have at least 30 years yet.

David the police in Turkey don't mess about neither and I think most of us foreigners know that[:0] If you commit crime in Turkey be prepared to pay the price [:0] I saw a couple of coppers belting two young lads with their truncheons, (the lads were in the back of the police car) as they had started a fight in a bar (Gumbet) and an old Turkish fella had his head cut open in the fracas, it was just awful to see but I bet they didn't do it again.
