Train travel in Turkey

I want to find out more about travelling by train in Turkey. I love the idea of a long journey and having a sleeping compartment!
It doesn't have to be the high-speed train, I love to watch the scenery going by and getting a fleeting glimpse into the lives of people rather like being on a train in a "Hitchcock" movie! I love those little compartments and the dining car.
Has anyone toured Turkey by train? I'd love to hear of your experiences.
I found this link and if you look on the top right, you can select "english".

Re: Train travel in Turkey

We travelled by train from Izmir to Bandirma, then onto Istanbul by ferry. Very slow, but comfortable. Incredible scenery, but after 6 hours, there are only so many fields of sunflowers, tomatoes and olives you can take in. The buffet cart was minimal and alcohol strictly forbidden. Looking back and comparing prices, its not a lot cheaper to take the slow train compared to a flight.
This site by Tom Brosnahan is excellent.

Re: Train travel in Turkey

Have travelled by train from Izmir down to Selcuk and then to to Aydin the last stop on this route. We thoroughly enjoyed the journey and the lovely scenery and the train was so very modern. We would love to travel on another route at some future date.

It might be worth checking out this website

How to travel by train from London to Istanbul (Turkey)

You can also find journeys within Turkey.
I can't comment whether the prices are good or not.
