Monarch Hand Luggage

For the first time we are flying to the UK with Monarch. Does anyone know if they are pedantic about the size of hand luggage? My hand luggage bags, which I have used on TC flights, are OK on the height and length but the width they are quoting on their web site is 25cm and mine are 28cm and 29cm respectively. Saying this I have taken these bags on TC flights and, according to their web site, the width is 20cm.

I don't want to have to go out and buy new bags.

Re: Monarch Hand Luggage

Sue,

I've found that it all depends on what side of the bed the check in person has got out that morning.

If they make you put it in one of those cages then you're stuck.

It's your call.

Re: Monarch Hand Luggage

Could be a costly gamble - 100 to be exact if they stick by the rules!
They are quite clear on their website and say that any hand luggage that exceeds weight and/or dimensions will be placed in the hold and you will be charged 50 per bag.
In fairness to the airlines, some check in staff let them go through but the simply fact is that they do set out the dimensions and then its your choice if you deliberately flout them.

It quite clearly states:

Any hand baggage taken to the gate that exceeds the maximum weight and size restrictions will be placed into the hold and a penalty charge of 50/€62 will be levied.

I have seen people who think they have escaped by getting past check-in (some believe it or not who leave their oversized hand luggage with a non-travelling member of the family in the airport and then collect it before they go through security) who are then stopped at the gate - and on occasions at the door to the aircraft and charged for the oversize.
Easyjet last year on one of my flights had a member of staff at the end of the airbridge with a set of scales and measuring crate checking bags!

Have not travelled with Monach but Ryan Air and Easy Jet both use the metal cage and there is no leeway.

Re: Monarch Hand Luggage

Use a soft canvas bag, it usually squashes into the measuring cage without too much effort, I find. Just be careful about the weight. Wear a coat with big pockets. . . . full :-)

Re: Monarch Hand Luggage

Lots of airlines are now weighing your hand baggage. Wear loads of clothes climb the
stairs looking like penquin woman remove poly bags from your pocket and disrobe in the loo as soon as the seat belt light goes out - only problem if you have a rough flight and they close the loos you could oveheat.
