Duty Free purchases

Just over a year ago I flew back from Izmir via Munich to Heathrow with Lufthansa. At Izmir I purchased a litre of Brandy and a litre of Vodka at the duty free. On arrival at Munich I was told that I was not able to carry it onto my next flight as the goods were bought in a non-EU country. I either had to drink it, pay duty or hand it in. As tempted as I was to drink both bottles!!! I had to hand them in. Very angrily!!

I was just reading the Lufthansa site when I came across this.

Since 31 January 2014 a new technology for checking liquids, sprays and gels in hand luggage has been in use at all European airports. What’s new is that passengers may now also carry liquid duty-free goods, which have been bought at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU, while changing flights at an EU airport. In order to do this, the goods purchased must be carried in a sealed duty-free bag conforming to international standards), with the sales receipt visible inside the bag

This means we can now buy in Turkey, carry it onto our connecting flight. Yippee

Re: Duty Free purchases

That's been the rule for many years now. Don't know about getting sealed bags in Turkey but certainly has worked on the way out from UK and Ireland.

Re: Duty Free purchases

This has been the case in Turkey too since the ban on liquids in hand luggage. The Turkish duty free will put your purchases in a sealed bag, if you tell them you are a transit passenger

I think that this is a new rule and only came into force in January. I can honestly tell you from bitter experience that you were not allowed to buy duty free booze in Turkey, carry it into Germany and transfer to a connecting flight. I agree on the way out from UK is not a problem, because UK is an EU country. Whereas Turkey is not.

Re: Duty Free purchases

Legally you are only allowed to bring 1 litre of spirits per person into Turkey. Up to a few years ago the ruling was 5 litres each. Obviously people do bring more in but take the risk of having it confiscated! A couple of friends brought 4 litres in this week and then bought another 2 litres on arrival at Dalaman duty free arrivals shop.

Overview

The following goods may be imported into Turkey by travellers aged 18 and over without incurring customs duty: • 400 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars and 250g of tobacco.
• 1L of alcohol over 22% volume or 2L of alcohol under 22% volume.
• 600ml of perfume and eau de toilette.
• 2kg of food products (eg tea, coffee or confectionery).
• Souvenirs to the value of €430 (reduced to €150 for children under 15).

Prohibited Imports

Narcotics. Sharp implements (including camping knives) and weapons require a special permit.

Prohibited Exports

The export of souvenirs such as carpets is subject to customs regulations regarding age and value. The export of antiques is strictly forbidden, with harsh penalties for those caught doing so. Minerals may only be exported under licence from the General Directorate of Mining Exploration & Research. You can't export tea, coffee, grain products or spices.

Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Duty Free purchases

Unusual as you can't buy duty free in an eu country to take to another eu country
