Sights to see around Antalya?

Does anyone have any recommendations for historical places to visit near Antalya please?
We are thinking of flying into Antalya instead of Bodrum and sightseeing for a few days before driving to our place in Bodrum, also how far away from Antalya airport is Side? We are wondering whether to get a hotel near the airport so we can start our adventures straight after breakfast maybe starting Side way.
Many thanks

Re: Antalya

Side is just 50 minutes from Antalya airport and has Apollo Temple where Anthony and Cleopatra fell in love - lots more Roman ruıns too includıng an active amphitheatre - a pretty little harbour - a Saturday market - many shops bars and restaurants and the 2nd longest sandy beach ın all of Turkey. Side is truly my favourite place in all of Turkey and İ have been all over!

Good places to stay in the Old Town are - Kamer Motel - The Beach House Hotel - Lale Park - all on quiet streets yet a couple of mınutes only to the sıghts. You can also do a day trıp to Perge whıch ıs where St Paul gave hıs fırst ever sermon - and one of the oldest amphıtheatres ın the world = Aspendos.

Thanks Martin, these are on our list to visit, we're not intending visiting beaches just historical sites but recommendations are welcomed

Re: Sights to see around Antalya?

To the east, worth seeing is Perge, Side, and IÁ Kale, the ancient part of Alanya. Going to Side you'll also see signs for Seleucia, which is worth a visit.

To the west of Antalya is Termessos, Olympos, The Flaming Chimera Rocks (in Turkish, Yanartaş), and Phaselis.

There is also Arycanda, and Myra (where Saint Nicolas was a bishop during Byzantine times) to the west, requiring a two or three-hour drive along the coastal road.

Don't forget the Antalya archaeological museum. Beautifully preserved relics and statues from ancient cities all around Antalya to be seen there. There is also an excellent archaeological museum in Alanya.

If you drive to Bodrum along the coastal road, you'll see many signs pointing to ancient cities, since there are so many along the coast. Just follow the signs and explore. You will see dozens more ancient cities besides what I have mentioned along the coastal road between Antalya and Bodrum.

Re: Sights to see around Antalya?

I regard Termessos as the best historical site in Turkey and highly recommend it. Low key but vastly different to the usual sites. One of the few places Alexander the Great could not conquer.

Re: Sights to see around Antalya?

On the way to the Bodrum area in between Yatagan and Milas is Stratonikea a sort of small scale Ephesus worth a couple of hours of anyone's time in my opinion, its about 20 minutes past the airport if driving out of Bodrum.

Totally agree and just before this on the left is Kıyıkıslacık always a good spot for lunch after visiting the ruins

Re: Sights to see around Antalya?

Love Antalya. We always stay in the old town, shops, restaurants harbours is all walking distance. Perge and Aspendos a must, and Duden falls is lovely 3tl to get in, its not the waterfall that goes into the sea, but the one inland, there is somewhere to eat and drink there too, though a couple of hours is all you need there, unlike Perge and Aspendos which will take a good few hours to get around, and when we went in June it was 20tl to get into each one. We've been there many times and have seen everything between Bodrum and Izmir which is why we thought this road trip could start from flying into Antalya. There looks as if there will be more than 8 days of sites to see, really looking forward to it and really appreciate all your comments
