Airport Visa Fines

Really Pis☆☆d Off. On Tuesday we left Turkey after a 70 day stay. Arrived on 15th September on a new visa which did not run out until 13th March. Arrived at Izmir for out Turkish Airlines flight to Manchester via Istanbul. Booked in, went through security/passport control all ok. Lovely flight to Istanbul, and had approx 1hr until next flight. Arrived at visa point and after lots of huffuing ang puffling he said you are illegal, you have overstayed by 35 days you must pay a fine! Off course we said NO we are totally legal. At that point he said go to visa overstay office in main terminal. After 15min walk we found the desk, us and about another 500 people all arguing that they we legal. Luckily I was using a wheelchair after falling on the stairs, so we had help and went to the front of the que. Only to be told you either pay or you will be deported as illegal overstay. So begrudingly we said ok, then had to go to another desk to pay, what turned out to be a fine of 112ytl each, the n had to go back to the desk to get paperwork. Finally we thought ok might get flight after all lol. Only to get to security/visa to find about 1000 people queing or should l say fighting to get to the few desks that were open. Luckily again we push to the front and had to physically run to get the place, which was just closing the doors. If it was not for the guy pushing my wheelchair we would never have made the plane! Now we have a quandry, what to do, we have a legal visa or do we. We were told we could get a new visa the next day! but is it true! Will be contacting the embassy for advise, but not holding my breath. Also this is not a one off, my friend got fined at Bodrum at the end of October for overstaying her visa, even though she had only been out on her new visa for 40days. Lots of different nationalities were arguing at Istanbul that they were legally here. Is this the new norm, just fine everyone!!!!!!

Re: Airport Visa Fines

Did you take account of the 180 day countback from your departure day.

It is not just 90 days on your current visa as they will count back 180 days (and this could be over 2 visas) and add up the days you have been in Turkey during the previous 180 days.

Re: Airport Visa Fines

It is irrelevant how many days have been used on a "new" visa. What matters is how many days have you been in Turkey in the last 180 and if the answer to that is more than 90 then you are an illegal overstayer.
Some people mistakenly believe that when they get a new visa they get another 90 days but this is not the case if you have had a total of more than 90 days in the previous 180 no matter how many visas you have had.
As has often been said on here, the evisa only gives you a right to enter the country and you can have as many visas as you wish overlapping but the 90/180 must be adhered to.

As stated earlier it is the total days you are there counting back 180 days from when you leave. We also got done two years ago on this basis and we were fined more for ten days than you were,L O L.for your overstay of 35.

Re: Airport Visa Fines

Turkey's economy is on a downward spiral , this restriction will hit the tourist and local economy harder than Turkish authorities either realise or care.

The Caliphate beckons.

This 90 days in any 180-day period rule was started by the Schengen Zone in 2013. It's just unfortunate that Turkey decided to adopt it as well.

After the shooting down of Russian plane they might soon be paying your air fare to come to Turkey. I understand Russian tourist agencies have stopped selling flights from Russia!!!

Part of the EU "harmonisation". The problems arose after Turkey had adopted the rule and followed a case in the EU courts which resulted in the counting back interpretation. I don't see how Turkey can be blamed for peoples failure to do the maths correctly particularly as there are helpful calculators as has been mentioned.
