Places to go near Ataturk airport in Istanbul

We will be in Ataturk airport for approx 5 hours before our connecting flight. Where can we go for approx 2 to 2 and a half hours. Is there a small town with a little beach where we could sit and have lunch? Not interested in shopping centres. Case is full!

Unfortunately Ataturk airport like most other airports is in the ar*e end of nowhere so it's a good taxi/bus rise to anything like your looking for. Have you thought of using one of the VIP lounges?

You could catch the Metro to Aksaray where there are interesting markets/restaurants, and at least you can stroll around, have a coffee and 'people watch'

Istanbul is a massive urban city. From the outer edge of the European side, across the Bosphorus and to the outer edge of the Asian side is over 100 kilometers. From the Marmaris to the Black Sea is over 30 kilometers. Traffic is constantly congested at all hours of the day making any ground transport a slow and major problem for someone on a tight schedule. Taxis or buses are very iffy for such a short time and a taxi can be quite expensive. They would never make it on a city bus and I believe they have to go to the otogar (bus station) for the express. If it is raining they will NOT be able to easily or timely find a cab.

They have a 5 hour wait. They have to check in 1 hour??? before flight time. They may have luggage unless checked through. It takes 10 - 15 minutes (allow 20) fast walking to get to the tram station (Hafif Metro) beneath the airport (and later back again). The metro is very cheap and comfortable but... even IF the train is waiting to leave when they arrive at the airport station it will be over 30 minutes to Aksaray, over 1 hour to Sultanahmet. They need to leave the Aksaray station to see much of interest (I personally did not find it interesting at all), they could easily get lost, disoriented, distracted or miss the necessary train for them to arrive back at the airport in time to check in.

Unless travellers have over 8 hours of layover time, I would NOT suggest trying to make it into the city.

Listen to Number 6, get a good book, hang out at one of the airport coffee shops such as Gloria Jean's which also have wi-fi for Internet browsing or checking emails or read a book. People watching at the airport can be quite fascinating since Istanbul is a major East-West hub.

After experiencing Istanbul traffic ,I totally agree with above .Unless I had 8 hours between planes I would not risk leaving thecA/Port.

Vip Lounge last year was around 20 Euro. Unlimited snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic), free wi-fi, computers and comfortable surroundings. What's not to like?

The Missus assures me that Yeşilköy has a beach, cafes and other such places near or along the beach.

Yeşilköy Google Map

Apologies, I had forgotten as it was a long time ago that I once visited there.

It might be a bit cold for swimming.

Re: Places to go near Ataturk airport in Istanbul

I have a similar question. Turkish airlines has rescheduled my flight so I arrive in Istanbul from London at 18:35 and do not leave for Kayseri until 06:20 the following morning. Being both skint and tight-fisted, I feel it is pointless to check into a hotel for half a night. Hopefully my luggage will be checked through so I'll only have a backpack.

So has anyone any suggestions where to hang out in Istanbul until the small hours of the morning?

Skinflints are not welcom in Istanbul. It can be costly to go into the city after hours in a taxi. It is a LONG way from the airport to any place of night time interest.

Did you read my previous post?

The Metro does not run all night so check the times for going out and returning, otherwise you have to take a cab to return.

Most of the "tourist" places close in the late afternoon. Unless you know where you are going, the bar districts are not a good idea.

You could go to Taksim and walk the length of Iştiklal Caddesi and watch the people and perhaps do some shopping or get a meal.

Good luck
