Driving to turkey

I received the following message from a friend today; can anybody help please:-

"I have a favour to ask. We are hoping to drive to Turkey again this year, but every time we do we have the same problem: getting a green card from our insurers to cover various countries that we pass. They won't issue one and some countries insist on it, (even though our insurance covers us for some of them, such as Bulgaria). Wondered if you'd mind posting a question on this on your turkish living forum? I.e if anyone has got one / how they got it / where they needed it etc. We know Turkey's ok as we just pay for some insurance at the border."

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Driving to turkey

I personally have not done the trip for many years. I would look to the AA or RAC to see if their insurance brokers could help.

I insure my car with Saga specifically due to their Green Card being the best value around. For EU countries you do not need a Green Card so cannot understand the issues you have experienced. I go via Serbia and Bulgaria to Turkey and I only need the Green Card for Turkey.
Interestingly I would prefer to go via Montenegro and Macedonia but Saga will not give Green Card cover for Bosnia or Montenegro ( cannot understand why but Bosnia is a no go for any UK insurer I have contacted )

Re: Driving to turkey

I always get mine through LV, I have European cover included in my policy with them but have to specify what non European Countries I want cover for, there seems a huge list!
Might be worth a call.

Re: Driving to turkey

I assume Serbia is your problem

I found no insurance company other than Saga that covers Serbia. Maybe you can ask your insurance company to add it at a cost. They will charge you something extortionate at the Serbian border. I've heard €200+

You could go around. Or get the ferry from Venice to Greece. The insurance problem is the main reason I use the ferry, also because it's less driving

Re: Driving to turkey

I have done this trip for the last three years various routes. I find the ferry from Ancona to Greece the easiest and a lovely drive. Its not to costly either if you dont get a cabin. Most dont.
I have to insist on a green card from my insurance company and eventually they send me one. You will need to specify the route and stick to it as they will only include those countries, so any possible detours add them .
As previous posters have said there are some countries they dont cover so ask early. Last year my insurance company who I have been with for several years suddenly announced they were not going to cover me in Turkey this was due to the troubles. I eventually persuaded them to do it as a one off as they had covered me the previous two years and had not informed me of a change when I renewed my insurance. Due to an operation I wont be driving this year so I dont know the current situation.
Summary insist on that green card I have always had to show mine at the Turkish border. Check they cover all the countries you want to go through and dont assume Turkey itself is covered. I hope this helps

Re: Driving to turkey

I'd like to do a detour via Kotor and Bar in Montenegro en route to Turkey next year, which will then mean driving through Albania but struggling to find any UK based cover - I believe it may be possible to buy short term insurance at the Montenegro and Albania border but I'm not sure?

Re: Driving to turkey

When we drove down in June I was never asked to see my Green card at any time except on entering Turkey... Came Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Route..

On entering Bulgaria I had to show My Vehicle Document, which he ran through some system or other..I'm guessing Some EU centralized system, to see if it was on a stolen list...Dunno for sure...after several minutes I was allowed to proceed...

At the Turkish Border I had to buy 3 months insurance at a cost of 80 euros..
