Train to Turkey ?

Hi All, we have friends in the UK who refuse to travel by plane, but want to come and see us in Kas. So I am looking for advice on best routes by train. It looks quite easy (direct train or train/ferry via Ancona) to Istanbul, but gets potentially confusing from there... I'm really not sure how far south in Turkey the trains run, but I'm sure they would want to minimise bus travel if possible.

Any advice great fully received (as long as it's not "easier & quicker to fly")

Cheers

Leo.

Thanks Ian, yes I am aware of this site - problem is I don't know how far the train line comes down to Southern Turkey. When I look on line there is reference to Fethiye and Dalaman - but I don't think the line goes that far ?

Re: Train to Turkey ?

Train from Istanbul to Izmir and then Izmir to Denizli by train and then by bus to Fethiye

Istanbul to Izmir have sleeper cabins

or Istanbul to Konya and then bus

If you go to the Turkey site there is a map of the country. Denizli seems to be the closest. Certainly no trains to Fethiye. You probably know the story about the station at Dalaman Dalaman Railway Station ? On a Line of Its Own - Fethiye Times

Re: Train to Turkey ?

There used to be a cracking overnight sleeper from Istanbul to Denizili called the Pamukkale express, I traveled on it many times. it was suspended for w hile whilst the rebuilt Hayarpasa station in Istanbul. I am not sure if it has been resumed.

Re: Train to Turkey ?

Yes, Ibrahim Abi - that dolmus is still running between Istanbul and Denizli. This link could be helpful as well ... https://www.seat61.com/Turkey2.htm#Istanbul_to_Denizli ...

But why not travel by bus/coach? So much cheaper than taking a train and a very good network of buses throughout Turkey...

Re: Train to Turkey ?

Coaches don't have leg room for decent size chaps, and you have to put up with people, disgusting things. When you have a sleeper compartment there is just the two of you, room to stretch out, a fridge for the cold drinks, a short walk away is the dining car, loo when you need it, no stops for ciggie breaks, I could go on, truth is all men love trains. My favourite restaurant in Turkey used to be on the platform at Haydarpasa, before they did the station up. It still looked as if kaiser Bill has opened it recently, and the mezes were great.
