Side Demolition
The entire front in Side to Kumcoy has been demolished by the council in preparation of a new 16 Km walkway. Even the Jandama is being moved back 10 metres and established hotels have had their beach front moved back. The place looks like a tsunami has hit it. My favourite beach bar has gone forever. It was a strange week, three days of torrential rain surrounded by sunshine. Oh, and I managed to get the last two packets of throat tablets for Angela.
I forgot to add that the council expects to complete the work in 2 months well before the start of the season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Side Demolition
yeah I completely lost my bearings when i went for a walk down the beach last week, bit unnerving really when you think you know where you're going only to find all your usual landmarks gone lol, but can't wait to see what the end result is like!

Re: Side Demolition
Oh my goodness Philogic, I am not sure what to think about that. If it is going to be anything like the walkway from Colakli to Kumköy, it will look very neat, but all you have there is enormous all inclusive 5 star hotels on one side and their own private beaches with facilities on the beach side. Hopefully it will offer a bit more variation than that. The Colakli to Kumköy stretch has nice park like gardens, cycle path, fitness equipment etc. but I find it very sterile, very unturkish and totally lacking in atmosphere. Not at all like all the last stretch before Side was, with all its small bars and restaurants.
Hope Angela can give us another update when she is there next month.

Re: Side Demolition
I was told last week, when I was there, that 380 unlicenced bars and encroachment areas without planning permission will be demolished. I was also told that there are no private beaches in this area. I expect it will look a bit like the Spanish Costas

Re: Side Demolition
This all sounds a little drastic but hopefully the end result will be worth it.
Does anyone have any up to date pictures of the work? It would be nice to see how it all looks at the moment?

Re: Side Demolition
I am crying in my drink Philogic - hic !! And perhaps I won't give those throat tablets to my Mum - I may be needing them myself after reading this Post by you - he he ! Thank you for remembering them. She will be delighted. She turned 80 last week and hasn't been to the doc's for 26 years, but she does like her Turkish ginger/eucalyptus throat tablets when she gets a sore throat. As you know, I am back to Side in early January, so of course I will take photos and update this post then. Sad eh? That beach area between Side and Kumkoy was one of the best ever. But you are wrong in one aspect ... Akdeniz Sitesi where my villa is, does have its own stretch of beach by the 5-star Arum Hotel there ... I will have to check it out too when I am back. HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL .. Angela - now in Surrey, UK -

Re: Side Demolition
If it stops raining before I go back to the UK on Tuesday for Christmas I will have a walk on with the dog and my camera and post any pics, but looking at the weather forecast it looks rather wet.

Re: Side Demolition
That would be good Sue. I still can't get over this, why can't they leave the good things alone. Why does Side have to end up looking like any other "costa".

Re: Side Demolition
by the sound of it, it's not just the beach that will see changes, i was told today that changes will be made to old Side too. Don't know exactly what but believe that some of the shops and restaurants are going to be knocked down!!
