Safety Concerns

My family and I are coming to Turkey for the first time in September and I am unsure about just how safe Side and the surrounding area is.

I've always said i'd never visit Turkey for one reason or another and have heard conflicting reports from friends who have been - one couple I know have been visiting for years and don't have a bad word, another friend barely left the hotel and said that when his wife ventured out unaccompanied she felt intimidated by the local men.

I also had a granparent that fought against the Turks in Salonika during WW1 whose views were passed down but I won't go into that... I understand they have a different culture to us and I hope shopkeepers aren't as pushy as I expect they will be - i'll just walk out if they keep pestering me, but what is really concerning me is safety particularly at night time.

foI have read about the new promenade and it'd be nice to perhaps walk back to the hotel from the town at night providing it's not too dangerous. Any advice or reassurnce would be appreciated.

Re: Safety Concerns

Do you want someone to confirm your concerns or squash them? How will anything said make any difference?

Naturaully i'd like my concerns to be quashed. I'm not concerned about terrorism, just localised crime and whether it's safe to walk in quiet areas at night.

Welcome to the forum.
If you come here fearing the worst then that is what you are going to see in people.
Not sure why you think it is dangerous maybe caught in the "Muslim" thing. There will be some one along to advise you soon.

Re: Safety Concerns

My grandfather fought the Germans in WW2 but went to Germany and did seem very safe.

Put it this way, I feel more safer here by far then I do in the UK where people get mugged for their shoes, cars getting stolen all time, high streets being no go areas on a friday and saturday night, abusive teenagers loitering around off licenses, Burglary which is the 4th highest in the world........................need I go on?

Welcome to TLF

I suspect most Turks will not know your Grandparent.

I'd rather have a night out in the less salubrious back streets of Izmir, than the certain grief available in posh Bath.

If you ask for trouble you will find it, dress for the occasion.

The sky is falling.

Re: Safety Concerns

Tris its only natural to have concerns if you have never visited Turkey before.

Believe me, I have always felt safe here. I,ve lived here for 11 years and not once have I felt frightened or intimidated.

My 84 year old Mum visits me regularly and she is quite happy to wander around the town where I live after dark. Something she would never dream of doing where she lives in the UK.

Turkish people are incredibly friendly , and curious. They seem to enjoy engaging foreigners in conversation. If a shop keeper of restaurant worker tries to encourage you into their premises and you,re not interested, then politely say no and carry on walking. No offence caused on either side then.
However, sometimes it is enjoyable to have a little banter with the shop keepers and don,t be afraid if you are offered a glass of (apple) tea (very refreshing). The Turkish, besides being huge tea drinkers are also extremely hospitable.

Go with an open mind and I,m sure you will have a great holiday. Let us know how you get on.

Soo x

I am a little concerned about the "muslim" thing and how they view us and react to us, but from what I gather Turkey is secular country so can't see this being an issue. It'd be nice to get out of the resort and see some of the real Turkey. I'll be taking my driving licence and once i've assessed the driving conditions may hire a car for a couple of days. I'd like to visit Mamure castle - is that too far to travel there and back in one day?
